Handbook & oil filler cap states 'BMW recommends Castrol'

As long as you're consistent with your dealership, shouldn't really matter although there are some other specs that you need to meet (ACEA A3/B4, API SK/CF).

I did some research last year and concluded that both are great oils but the Castrol 0W-30 is better.

Remember the 0W or 5W only matters on start-up performance. Which is a flow/pressure rating @ -35 and -30C respectively. So in the temperatures encountered in warmer climates the measurable difference is small.

With the above in mind I am sure dealers use which ever oil suits the most cars they have in that area and climate not what is specifically best for the M5.

I would think 0W-40 would be the ideal choice. When cold pours no slower than a 0 weight. When hot doesn't thin out more then a 40 weight. Really the best of both worlds.

Can I just put a quart of 5w-30 in I have the message that popped and dealer isn't open tomorrow and I have to drive 100miles

If they put 0w-30 in would it mess it up mixing the two?

BMW says you can do that. I wouldn't do it.

Mix the two?

Or top it off even with matching oil?

Or both?

The instructions from BMWNA say you should use 5W-30 but can top off with 0W-30 or 0W-40.

My dealer showed me a bulletin on this but I don't have a copy since I didn't believe it.

I asked the same question in this forum before and the service rep at my dealer. Pretty much got the same answer - do not mix it.

I will use only use 0W-30 for my mid cycle oil change.

You have that backwards my friend. See page 179 of the PDF F10 M5 owners manual.

You missed my point.

Wasn't referring to manual. I was referring to dealer service guidance bulletin that the service advisor showed me.

My point is this bulletin and the manual are contradictory.

I'd rather have proper oil level, vs worry about mixing slightly diff weights.

ALL UK dealerships should now be using 0-30, they were instructed last September to do so, those that are not should be confronted IMO.

Oil

I brought this up with my SA at United BMW and they stated they will be using 5W-30 per 1200 mile break-in recommendations. Was thinking of may be using 0W-30 at interim oil change which I will pay out of pocket.

I switched to 0W-30 at United BMW Duluth for my 1200 mile service. I took my own oil, and then had to escalate the issue to the service manager to get them to install it as part of the 1200 mile service. It was like pulling teeth. I had a second encounter with them last month to get a new windshield and again they were a pain to deal with wanting to keep the car for 5 days during which they would park it outdoors. I told them to fuck off. I was using this dealership because they had the highest service ratings on dealerrater. No idea how!

I ended up doing the windshield at United Roswell and the guy I work with there is much more collaborative and much more customer oriented.

Do you have a PDF copy of that notification. Would be helpful for us to take to US dealers just in case any of us get push back.
