M5 Died Friday Night

Driving home Friday night and my M5 starts to loose engine power, shakes, few seconds later - drivetrain malfunction on the screen and car dies. Try to start it, boggs... nothing.

Tow it to dealership. Here is what they are saying:
Car was actually out of gas, but the gas meter was messed up so it was showing half a tank.

They are currently reprogramming the car and said it will be ready for pickup after.

Anyone have a similar problem?
Is it possible that the M5 would shoot a drivetrain malfunction while simply being out of gas?

Thanks!

Yes. I ran out of gas once by accident too. You do get a Drivetrain Malfunction if you do run out of gas. Running out of gas can be bad for the engine, but it's not the end of the world. You will be fine.

running out of gas

A friend of mine had that same problem.
I his case what happened was that the car hit a raccoon and never thought much of it till after some time he found that the fuel pump assembly was literally dislocated out or its rubber mount points and the fuel gage was showing a faulty read out.
Raccoon hit the plastic tank hard, son of gun and no... he did not survive that

Yup. Once u have gas.
Do put some race gas about 2 gallons and fill with BP 93 gas (if your car has Jb atleast)

Having bad gas is no no, your timing will be all screwed up car will run like crap for a while till timing is back to normal

Heres an example of c63SC about 700+whp running out of gas suprising the car did not blow up. Lol.

Reprogramming did not work. They are now replacing the fuel sensor.

I always reset my km tracker so I will always know if my fuel tank sensor ever goes faulty. Like this car usually does 450-500 km on a 72 litre fill up... so any more unless I'm on a long road trip is questionable

I don't know if this can relate to your situation Cause I have 550i
I had similar situation with drive train malfunction when I was low on fuel.
I also took car to get it checked they told drive train malfunction came on because of low fuel.

yup, had the exact same thing lol. Except that my gas gauge was functioning perfectly. I did get an engine malfunction icon and warning.
I was just too busy to go get a fill, and wanted to see how far I can get. Which was really stupid.
I was on a busy 6 lane highway, making a left turn, when my car died. With traffic barreling down on me. Needless to say, I broke into a little sweat. Good thing was....I was able to start the car and just roll into my turn. Then I broke down. Went to get gas by foot, and all good after that. Lesson learned.
