Nicest police officer ever!

So,

Clear day, open motorway and hardly any cars on the motorway. That's almost a recipe to put it in M. Stupidly I got up to 130 and BAM. I saw an undercover BMW police car come into my lane and signal me. Sh*tting myself I just did the right thing and pulled over straight away, he approached me and said "How many horsepower does this thing have?" to which I replied "507". He then told me to get out of the car and got my details. He then told me "I clocked you at 127MPH, I like to think of myself as a bit of a petrolhead and know what this thing is capable of, it's a beautiful car and don't drive it like an idiot, okay? I'm giving you two options because you've been honest, you can have 3 points and a £300 fine or go on a driving course and have a £500 fine. I took the driving course and even now I'm shocked at the outcome. Considering people have been banned for 6 months and had to pay £1000+ fines for driving over 100MPH in the UK I can't believe the outcome of this. The M5 actually got me out of having my licence revoked. I can only think that he didn't take my licence away because I was paying attention and braked straight away, he did also look at the size of my brakes and the tyres are about 300 miles in so almost new. Would love to hear what you guys think about why I didn't get banned, or your personal experiences? (I am fully aware of the seriousness of driving at high speeds on public roads but the conditions and lack of traffic are something to take into account.)

I don't think any M owners bought the car to drive it like a Subaru Forester. But, I could be wrong. I like being a hooligan now and again, but there's a time and place for "excessiveness" and I think you chose the right situation but, got stoned and were very lucky. Enjoy.

Speeding any time has its risks, but it is purely pot luck if you dont get caught...

the best you can hope for is that the constabulary acknowledge that the car (and driver) are capable for handling such brutal speeds, and hopefuuly just give you a slap on the wrist....

the moral of this story?? ... "pick your moments carefully, and hope no cops or cameras are lurking in the bushes...."

Driving any high performance cars requires skill. More important it also requires the best laser and radar money can buy. I was hesitant to buy an exhaust for my 550i, but dropped nearly $4k for a laser and radar detector. No tickets and I usually drive modestly, but while not back from any douches in ricers thinking they can beat me.

truth. My ALP and escort 9500ix have me without a ticket in 8+ years, and I drive like a hooligan on the freeway

Same thing happened to me when I had my 540. Was doing well over 100 and because I was honest got 3 points and 60 fixed penalty fine.

I didn't realise they had change the law and police can now give more points and fine amounts on the spot rather than issue fixed penalty or court.

I think you were very lucky.. Was it definitely undercover police, because had it been traffic police I'm pretty sure you would have had a different outcome.

I always thought anything over a 100, was a instant ban?

If you go to court it is unless there are special circumstances.

Normally anything more than 30 over the speed limit is court rather dealt with through fixed penalty.

Just the fact that you were pulled over by a BMW is awesome. If a BMW pulled me over, I would write the ticket myself. Here in America, I know I can outrun every American made police car, which is why I am so frustrated when I decide to pull over.

The first and only time I got pulled over was in the beast doing WOT in 3rd. Luckily I was clocked at 72 in a 50 lol. Since I was a youngin with a clean record he decided to let me off with a warning. Little did he know my intentions if he didn't stop me lol.
That's how mexico is i guess.

I think you were lucky on 2 counts:

1) He was a petrolhead (Cops are less punitive when they would do the same thing in your place)

2) He probably was lenient because it was a clear road. It's very different doing 130mph, and doing 130mph with lots of other cars around.

Another count:

He may have been finishing soon, so couldn't be bothered to fill out the slip and argue with you had he have given you a ticket.

Either way your lucky imo

Agree with all points stated, I used to do rallying so I can control a car albeit nobody can control that's about to spin at 100+ though. In the UK it is an instant ban at 96+ if you go to court but thank god the guy was lenient and knew what the car was. Can agree that the outcome would've been different if it was wet and there was lots of traffic, not sure if being traffic police would make a difference, I suppose it's down to the police officer. On the subject of being able to outrun a police car The UK police get Subaru's and BMW 520D's (Basic Astra's commonly) so I could've had a go but it's just not worth it, they get your licence plate or get a helicopter so you can get away but they just catch up with you later. Still can't believe my luck.

same happened to me on 2nd of January in scotland, i was on the way to london, leaving isle of skye, enjoying last bits of most amazing road i have ever been in uk and i got into village from 60 zone to 30
slowed down to 50, coming into the corner, guy coming towards me starts flashing crazily i slam on breaks and can see 2 police officers on the other side of a road 100-200m away
i thought i am F***
i slowed down
he obviously stopped me by raising his hand, i stopped on my side of the road, opened the window, asked him if i should park next to his car on the other side of the road, so i dont obstruct the traffic
he said NO NEED then he asked me if i know the speed limit, i said YES ITS 30
he asked me what speed i was doing? i said 37 and i am very very sorry for my terrible mistake
he said i clocked you at 41... paused... i am sure you can leave without 3 points and fixed penalty of 120
i said definitely officer
he asked me to slow down and dont speed
i said merry x-mas, happy new year, very sorry again and gone

i guess 2nd of Jan being second day of new year saved my ass

OP u lucky as well cheers to that
