New Tires ordered, 27k miles on the stockers

Well the day has (nearly) come and I must pay to continue playing.

I want to say that I am really impressed with how the stock Michelin's have held up on my 13 M5. They will be just shy of 28k when they come off on Thursday afternoon. That also includes 1 HPDE weekend at Barber Motorsports Park!

So as I wrote about long ago when complaining about BMW mph's vs Actual mph, I'm going to "up" the cross section ratio on the rear tires. I'll share back how that works out. I'm expecting good and uneventful.

Another indirect advantage is that though I'll be staying with 295s in the rear, I'll actually be getting an increase the contact patch (aka Tread width) from 11.5" on the rears to 12". The downside is I now am paying a "Ferrari-inspired premium" ($416) over the 30 series tires for BMW ($351).

Here is a link to spec information should anyone else wish to repeat:

Stock config:
265/35ZR20 (99Y) XL BMW
295/30ZR20 (101Y) XL BMW

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....5&autoModClar=

35 Series rear:
295/35ZR20 (105Y) XL K1 Ferrari

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....SSXL&tab=Specs

The Ferrari spec tires have a higher load rating than the BMW, but higher is acceptable (its when you go lower that you often get into trouble with sidewalls that are too weak). There is an SL Ferrari version (same 295/35 ratios) available as well that is actually very close to the XL BMW version's load rating but you don't increase any in the tread width.

Probably boring stuff to some, but I'm just sharing in case it may benefit someone else.

Interesting.

But with the 35 series tire you are gaining 1.1" in tire diameter. When I installed drag radials that were 1.5" taller, they messed with the car's shift points (only at part throttle but not all the time, WOT was fine).

I don't think going to a 295/35/20 is a good idea either.

A 305/30/20 is a better idea.

You might mess with the DSC since it's much taller.

Northern X5M:

No issues on shift points on my drives this afternoon. Maybe you can describe your issue more and I can report back in more detail.

HXS:

If going taller would mess with the DSC, wouldn't having more traction mess with it?
MDM let them break free in a controllable manner without any unexpected drama.

Otherwise:

The rears definitely look beefier with the 35 ratio. Almost makes me wish I had gone 275/35 in the front to match the look a little closer.

Rides like a dream again... 'Sport' suspension is smoother than 'Comfort' was with the worn threads on the old tires. Haven't felt any clearance or bump issues, but it is only just over 1/2" radius difference with is probably inconsequential vs stock.

This should lose you some acceleration as you are tricking the car as if you were using a higher gear/numerically lower.

Interesting. I would have gone 305/30 in rear and 275/35 in front.

Unfortunately I don't think I will ever own a car for enough miles to warrant a new set of tires

Just reporting back in now that i have had some time with the car....

Moderate success on the speedometer correction as result of the tire change. GPS verified 73 mph at 74 indicated. Before I was GPS verified at 74 indicated. :-)

The new tires grip very nicely and the car is much more planted when running car in full tilt.

It still feels like the beast it was (can't feel a powerloss with the butt dyno). No issues with the electronic nannies.

When I say much more planted, it has less tire slip in 2nd at WOT/MDM/Sport+ throttle/Sport+ suspension/Sport steering.
