Are our windscreens made of sugar glass?

I'll soon to be on to my 3rd screen within 6 months, they just don't seem to be able to withstand a stone hitting them, a small chip appears and then they crack immediately

I've only just had a new one fitted and it cracked with 5 days! the impact was so slight it was almost like a finger nail tapping on the screen.

It's starting to irritate me I wonder if there is a protective film that could be applied.

Is it just me or anyone else had issues?

I think it's just you bro. I'm at 57,000 miles now and my windshield is beat to hell with pocmarks and I have one chip but it didn't start a crack. I was actually surprised at the resiliency of my windshield being able to withstand such a beating over these last 3 years. I told myself I'l replace it if/when I get any kind of crack in it, but it hasn't happened yet. I too wonder if there is any kind of protective film that can be applied over it.

There is a protective film that can be applied.

However I'm not sure how good these are. Personally I wouldn't do it. But in your case, with your mileage it may be worth a shot.

Not just you. I'm going to be replacing my windshield soon just because of pitting. I can't stand pitting.

I had the same thing on my M3. I think BMW uses their climate comfort glass on all their vehicles now as standard.

Mine is all pitted to shit as well, like pretty bad, and very noticable after I put a dark tint on it, but I also ate a lot of dirt and shit flying from other cars with 355 size tires.

Wonder if your fit between A pillars is slightly more snug than others? That could put extra pressure on the windshield from the sides. Does the crack line go vertical?

No horizontal from midway up from the edge outwards, I wonder if the glass was stressed or poorly fitted I'm going to ask the dealer next week

Heh Damo! I'd had the car in for repairs and she was mint the dealer replaced the 1st windscreen but I'm now faced with getting someone like autoglass to replace this one and I just don't want them to do it.

Not an M5 but on my 2nd new windscreen on my F10. Have NEVER had an issue with any of my previous cars (BMW's or other brands). But the F10 seems to go through windscreens like nothing else...

This is why I love living in Arizona. I have a separate $0 deductible for glass coverage. I get a new windshield about once every 12-18 months.

I'll have to 2nd RPiM5 on this one. I'm coming up on 60k myself and aside from the general shotgunning, I've had a good hit or two, one of which I had repaired just to ensure it would not crack. Ultimately, no cracks and no windshield replacements, but I do think they are a bit CANDY (gl)ASS.

If I am unlucky enough to get a pit in the HUD area, I'll definitely be in the market for a Windshield.

BTW... did this to a windshield on a rental X5 in North Dakota thanks to a rock from an oncoming truck. I had the "pleasure" of watching the window flex when it hit!

I hear you... Will your insurers allow anyone else to repair/ replace the windscreen??

Off topic, but do you want those black chrome exhaust tips I had for my cp? They're brand new, never been worn... Yours if you want and just sitting in a box in my garage... When you're on your way to Harlow, let me know and I'll bring them with me and you can pick them up.. I'm 10 mins from the M11 at stansted.

Not sure I got away with it last time as it was storm damage so the dealer did it, I will try my best!

That would be great I'm in the process of replacing all the chrome bits.
