I'm a Turkish citizen and lived there until 26. Since then I'm living in US. When you're buying a car, aside from the 18% VAT, you're also paying additional tax based on engine displacement:

0-1600cc: 37%
1601-2000cc: 80%
2001+cc: 130%

Also, every year you're paying vehicle registration tax. As the car gets older the tax goes down, but for the first 3 years, the rates are as follows:

0-1300cc: $270
1301-1600cc: $430
1601-1800c: $750
1801-2000cc: $1170
2001-2500cc: $1750
2501-3000cc: $2470
3001-3500cc: $3770
3501-4000cc: $5921 (M3 is in this category)
4001-10000cc: $9700 (M5 is in this category)

The gas is freaking expensive as well: $9.5/gallon...

Luckily for the US the $ is the world reserve currency so duties tend to be more of a trade deficit management tool unlike Turkey which spends so much on defense and imports with almost certainly not as much to export to earn forex. In some counties that car would be over US$500k... Ouch
Great point... For now the US dollar is the world reserve currency. But for how long? I personally think its the way it is because the world doesn't have much of an alternative. The Euro has a lot to prove and the Yen is pegged. China manipulates it's currency and all others are unstable due to the governing bodies.

I hope things stay status quo for us in the United States so cars like this won't cost us $350,000+

Amazing, if you can afford a $350,000.00 car then moving to the US you would be multi-millionaires!

its all taxes - most of the folks with nice cars back home have plates registered outside Turkey even though they basically spend alot of their time in Turkey (ie Germany).

No doubt it is expensive but what most ppl don't realize that there is no middle class in Turkey- either you are filthy rich or you are poor. So while it appears to be outrageous, once you spend some time in say Istanbul and see how ppl spend their dough and how much they make, its really not out of the question that this M5 will still probably sell very quickly.
