How would you fix this? Instrument panel scratched

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I picked up my SG m5 last week.

I happened to be getting in my car in the afternoon/evening sun after work and when I looked at my instrument panel, there are these fine lines likely from BMW cleaning/prepping the car. They are very fine and can only be seen in certain light but nonetheless it bothers me.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

I would keep it as it is. Getting replacement from dealer will mean more scratch on other parts of the car.

Thats what i was thinking as well in terms of just leaving it. I can only see it under that lighting and no other time.

Does anyone know of any type of product that might get rid of these minor scuffs?

I can't even feel it with my fingernail

I know how to fix it but you need some specific tools.

If you have a dual action orbital buffer and a small 3" disc and a set of 3" pads your in luck.

Use a medium grit polish like Meguiars 105 (or similar) on it with a semi coarse pad. Move the steering wheel so you can fit it in. Then use a fine polish like 205 and a medium/fine pad. There are a million different polishes and pads.

Essentially paint correction on plastic. You can't do it by hand and get it perfect.

You can have a detail pro do it if you don't have the above. I've polished that crap from tail lights, dashes and consoles in many of my cars.

Use polywatch.
Ive used it on my screen and it came right off, also on my wood trim.
You can also use on your watches ect.

I buy it from this guy on ebay because it comes with a free polishing cloth

Just one more tip. Make sure to line the dash around the plastic cover with painters tape so you don't smear product on it or risk scuffing it if you accidentally touch it with the buffer.

Just be careful with Polywatch as it dissolves the plastic. Clean it up well. Use ISO Prop.

It is easier to use for sure.

Polishing Plastic

Happich Simichrome - german stuff I have used for over 25 years. Classic car restoration pro introduced me to this stuff. Use it like a polishing compound and safe on plastic, glass, stainless, chrome, etc. But I would use some frog tape around this area to prevent making a mess.

Been using this stuff on muscle car lenses, plastic and all kinds of other stuff since I can remember. You will not be disappointed.

Thanks guys for your responses.

I'm gonna try to get my hands on some Polywatch.

@Lakeom5 - when you say it dissolves plastic and to use iso prop, you mean rub the scuff with Polywatch then clean it off with iso prop? The iso prop won't give a hazy finish to the plastic will it?

I used it for many years when refurbishing watches. Just use the polishing cloth to buff it out and a microfiber cloth to wipe it clean. I used it and never had any issues at all.

I'm a fan of LAKEOM5's approach with the Meguiars. They make two different compounds specifically for aircraft acrylic that work great on the speedo/tach cluster surrounds; use the cleaner first (M17) and then follow with the polish (M10). The USAF uses this stuff on their HUD's and canopies.

Whatever you do, do not overheat the plastic!

This. I use polywatch on my Omega Speedmaster Pro. Works brilliantly.

Dilute it and you will be fine. Or use windex. Even a wet rag. Just don't leave it on forever. You can't mess it up so don't worry too much.

I don't understand the logic of trying to polish the plastic panel instead of letting the dealer replace it under warranty. After all, most probably it was the dealer that caused the damage in the first place.

If the dealer messes something else up then they will have to replace whatever it is as well. In the other hand, if polishing the panel messes it up even more then its warranty will be gone as well.

Have the dealer warranty it. I have had them replace parts they have scratched before.

Trying to fix it yourself is ridiculous.
