Why prefer to deny another man the option of a different transmission? That was my point. I think the car should be available as both because not everyone prefers one or the other. How is that wrong? |

I drive a stick but, I can not deny that the manual transmissions days are numbered. This will probably be the last M5 offered in stick. I don't know why this topic always turns into a big debate. If you like autos or vice versa you will not be turned the other way. Since were on the topic, DCT M5 for me. Stick shift feels out of date to me ever since I drove a DCT M3.

The 1M is not a mainstream product like the M5 therefore image is more important than availability. |

get real
those in the US just be happy. We have a choice!
Buy what you like and worry about your own stuff, not "pure BMW" Most of the people complaining here probably cant afford one anyhow, manual or automatic manual. After my DCT M3 i am excited to have this car in manual. Some people just like doing it themselves, so mind your business and stop trying to divide the community.

It's just a matter of self preference.
We are all BMW enthusiasts here and arguing over a transmission is just childish IMHO. *Sigh*, when will these arguments end? Look at the Lexus ISF (Does not come in manual), and all of Mercedes Benz AMG line up. NO MANUAL at all. We are still lucky coz BMW decided to offer the M5 in manual. If you want a manual, get a manual. If you want DCT, get a DCT. It's that simple. |

But the DCT won't obsolete a multi-clutch planetary box any time soon. Both types of automated transmission will play a role well into the future. A wet-clutch DCT is far simpler than an automatic transmission mechanically, and electronically they are equivalent. A dry-clutch DCT is a little more complex due to the need for a dedicated electro-hydraulic shifting subsystem, but still arguably no more complex than the traditional automatic with its ever-increasingly complex planetary gear trains, lock-up torque converters, and clutches. |

Well, if F1 and Le Mans cars are "automatic," then it's ok by my books. I'm sure having a traditional manual might be more fun in a non-racing car though. Regardless, options are good.
