2008 BMW  [6.24]
I feel that the new M5 has many key negatives (like the weight and engine response) but everything is offset/masked to the reviewers by the engine power. And indeed, this would be a great car for touring and drag racing, especially with some additional engine tuning. It could become a 10 second car with some careful tuning.

I said it even before the M5 was released, the new 5-series is so big and heavy (I drove one and it was horrible) that no M engineer could make it feel like a real sports car.

Wink Sport Plus

In other reviews, I have read that sport plus is utterly insane and is not acceptable for road use. you seem to have had 2 out of 3 settings to sport plus on the road, with only the steering to comfort. I was thinking that for the road when you want a more intense driving experience, you would only set all settings to Sport and not sport plus? Just an observation really

Throttle lag- Not throttle lag!

Nice- Recount, sounds like you had a blast!

The throttle lag you speak of is the traction control keeping you from spinning the wheels during the rain. Unless you had it in sport plus (all nannies off) which I doubt they let you do. The computer kills the torque curve so you don't just spin. This is why during the morning in the dry you did not experience this. DSC was saving you.

Its not a flaw it's a safety feature because 99.9% of people that buy this car can't truly handle it (not targeting you but I think you get my point). Having driven the M5 on Ascari earlier this year, I cam away with the car being much more tossable than it should be and it is much quicker around the track than the M3. You can hit the back kink at full throttle and brake before the chicane where if the front is set right you can go through much quicker than you think. Is it as precise in tight areas as the M3- nope but the car is much better sorted than is imaginable. FYI- It knocks even the M3 GTS out on the 'Ring.

Does the new M5 have active stabilisers (Dynamic Drive)? It would hugely benefit a car of this heft. My 740i M sport and previous X5M have this technology and it amazes me how quickly you can take corners with this technology on a large heavy car. Heck, even the 911 has it now and it is said to contribute to 4s improvement in lap time at the Ring compared to a model without that option. Imagine what it can do to a taller, heavier car!

I found the Sport Plus modes to be quite driveable. I did have the DSC on though (I think Sport Plus switches off DTC but leaves DSC on unless you manually switch off DSC). On the track I has suspension to Sport instead of Sport Plus because they said we should use the curbs through the chicanes, and I thought a slightly more generous suspension setting would keep the car more stable over changing road surfaces between tarmac and curb.

It does have the active stabilizers and it make a big difference. The car handles remarkably well. Don't take my comparison to the M3 the wrong way - this is a precise handling car - much more precise than the Jaguar XFR I drove at Homestead Speedway 3 weeks ago.

I believe it when BMW says this car is faster on the Ring than the M3. But the M3 just "feels" more nimble. That said if I was buying a new car next June, I'd take the M5 no questions! The breadth of the vehicles capabilities are just astonishing.

This makes sense. If this is the case, then this is the perfect car!

So the center console is plastic and not really hard nappa leather like on the M3?

Might be hard nappa, but it looked and felt like plastic to me. It's odd because everything else is leather. Perhaps it is hard nappa.

Looked like a pretty sweet experience. I like that they had the previous generations there as well.

You have to do a write up for us! How long are you going to keep this car?

I was getting concerned when reading about the throttle lag and it didn't make any sense to me. This really puts my worries to rest but exacerbates the wait
