Launch control - what am I doing wrong?
I tried using launch control last night, and I can't get it to work. My car has about 6,700 miles on it (so, well past break-in period) and I'd driven about 60 miles at highway speeds, so it was well warmed up. I followed the instructions:
* DSC off (not MDM; all the way off) * transmission in sequential mode; it was already in the most aggressive shift setting ("3") * left foot on brake * shift lever all the way forward At this point, there's supposed to be a flag on the instrument panel, but nothing happened. (Where does the flag appear?) What am I doing wrong??

Apply light pressure on the brake.
Launch control is useless on this car. Too hard to engage and I can coax a faster launch by modulating the throttle myself. Novelty at best. |

Is there a certain RPM that you need to get the engine to, before you release the lever?

Is it much different than stabbing the gas in 1st gear from a stop? I assume you won't do a rolling non-stop burn out though?

With my E M3 I recall you could set the RPM launch control would run at, I lowered mine and had much better launches than what it started off at.. Still not as good as practicing on your own and getting it down but it can make it easy once you get a good feel for the RPM to dial in (assuming it can be set)...

I had the exact same problem. MDM (I think) has to be turned off and you have to hold the lever forward for a few seconds. Also, the amount of pressure you put on the brake pedal seems very sensitive. A flag will appear on the lower left of the instrument cluster and the car will rev. Hang on tight because you will get an handful of wheel slip and the car will go sideways very quickly. I'm glad I did it once but will never do it again! Seemed really hard on the car and I agree with everyone, you can get a better launch by modulating the car yourself. Enjoy!!

I know the problem.
1.) NO incline/decline at all! Not even the slightest of a incline/decline is allowed. 2.) DO not hold or tap brake. Using the brakes disables it. Here is the correct procedure... 1.) sport plus mode in S3 2.) traction control OFF (not MDM) 3.) Car MUST be on a level surface. 4.) Press handle forward to show checkered flag. 5.) Hold gas down INTO indent at WOT. (If you dont hold it into indent, it wont shift at redline, you will bounce off rev limiter 6.) RPMs will build and hold. 7.) Ready? Let go of the handle and hold on! (again, hold throttle at WOT or it wont shift for you)

Wide Open Throttle = gas pedal mashed all the way to the floor.

The video in my signature shows how hard you can launch by controlling throttle.

I too have have tried all the above methods to activate the launch control in my M5 without any success. Does the dealership need to activate something in the vehicles computer to activate it?

I hate to be redundant, but it's imperative to feather the brake. You must depress it, but do so ever-so-slightly. You may think the computer won't recognize such a slight brake tap, but it will. Too much pressure will negate launch control...

And make sure to let engine/tranny be warmed up by driving the car (manual says 6 miles) before performing LC...It always works on my M6

as soon a you get traction control off, and trans in S3, stop the car completely, when you press the lever forward and hold it there the "flag" and "launch control" will display on the lower left dash. in my car you can press the brake or not and it will still work, but you do have to press the gas pedal to the FLOOR, and keep it there... the revs will rise to about 3K and stay there,
then you let go of the lever, and hold on (if it works you can't do another right away) |

I drove over 30 miles and the launch control was engaging but then I let the car idle for may be 20 minutes (engine still running) and the launch control never bothered to engage..I ran 3 times at a local airstrip and since I had to idle in the queue, I was not able to use launch control even once..I was able to use launch control anytime on my X5M but feel disappointed now
