Oil "Dip Stick" measure

HI All

How come the F10 M5 can only measure oil when engine is on? What about the old days when you just put a dip stick in the sump?

How does it measure with engine on?

There's a sensor in the oil pan. See this post for pics and info about it failing.

How exactly it works isn't clear. Also it's weird how the M5 requires you to be parked for measuring, while the 550i wants you to drive. Same sensor.
