Curious - M5 Range

Has anyone pushed the limits of fuel tank range to or below the zero point of calculated miles-to-empty in the F10? Just curious. I came close by mistake and I went through zero with no issues.

mdm - I think there was another thread on this very subject a couple of months ago. Search for it and see what others said. Be careful though that you don't do this often. Gasoline lubricates and "cools" the fuel pump.

^As he said, be careful. Seems like these cars don't like it. Although most cars will go beyond 0, simply because they don't trust people not to be stupid and set the "0 Miles" stop at something like 15 miles or so. That way, if you do like to live on the edge, you don't screw yourself over.

I did it once in my M6 to see how much gas it would take. It went from 1 mile left to ------, I had planned it out though so I was only 500ft from the shell gas station.

This was the result

There was a guy here who ran out of fuel when it reached zero. I think he said it said three, next thing it was saying zero and very quickly it stopped running. He felt the three was misleading.

I let it get to about 8 miles on a road trip once. I read on here or another M5 board that it was risky to let it get too low because some people were having problems with some CEL or limp mode after filling back up. I got 400 miles on the tank and had 8 left on the range when I filled up. It was 20 gallons on the fill. I usually put about 18.5 on a fill.

About 6mo ago ran out of gas on the interstate. Miles to empty counted all the way down. Then the dash marks. Went maybe 2 miles with the dash marks on the screen, then I was out.

Of note, I walked to the next exit. Retrieved 3 gallons of super. I out 3 gallons in and it would not start. Thankfully a road ranger had arrives by then. It requires another 3 gallons to starts. So it took 6 gallons to get it started again from completely empty.

Good intel. Not going to let this happen again. Pure laziness on my part and obviously not worth the hassle
