Bad luck with my passenger side rear tire/wheel ~@@

folks,

Bad news, leaving parking lot in a hurry after lunch today, I curbed my passenger side rear wheel and some damage to the tire. That tire is about 5 weeks old only. Although there's no sign of leaking, I am wondering if I should do a replacement. I have tire insurance, but I doubt the policy will cover such damage. Tomorrow morning I will have an appointment at my dealer so will check with them to see what they suggest.

Pictures of damaged wheel and tires to follow.

tire insurance in the US covers both rim and tire damage. It is worth at the very least to bring it to the dealer and see what they suggest- usually you have to front the cost and you get reimbursed afterwards.

I had the option to purchase the policy for both tires and rims, but i optioned to go with only the tires at the end. Not too worry about the look of the rim. I am more concerned if the chipped tire will cause a leak.

That sucks. Looks to be pretty far down the sidewall where rubber is missing. And it is pretty deep.

I'd just replace it...not worth having that hanging over your head to save a $500. I had an issue at 2K miles on my right front, and the question I asked myself was is it worth potentially having an accident over this in your $100K USD vehicle, let alone potential bodily injury?

I prefer to have it replaced even if it's not really causing any problem. Hopefully to hear some good news regarding to using the tire insurance tomorrow. If not, I will order a set from tirerack I guess.

Always, always replace.. especially when it's a safety concern. Sounds like you we're leaning towards replacement anyway, so you were thinking correctly about it.

@ the dealer service department now. Just spoke with a SA regarding to the chip on that tire. They said the damage isn't as bad and there is no need for a replacement at the moment. However, I will head to a reputable local tire shop and have a 2nd opinion.

I hit a pot hole two weeks ago and blew out the sidewall of the tire. only 2800 km on the tire too. Lucky for me I have rim and tire insurance, hells yeah make them pay. I was quoted $560 for tire and install. That's over 1/3 of what I paid for insurance.

Somehow, I think they are trying to avoid doing the tire insurance claim for me. I could get a brand new replacement for much less than the cost at dealer, question is, would that maintain the tire insurance I purchased?

The damage doesn't look that deep from the pic, mostly the 'rim saver' rib has been gouged out. There is no reinforcement structure on show. If air pressures is un changed then there is no leak, and I would be surprised if there was.

Having said that, I agree with the idea of getting it replaced.......so would enter a track day where you can burn rubber all day long and get some enjoyment out of it

Went to visit a reputable local tire shop and spoke to a technician who works there for 12 years, was told that it was only the "rim protector" part that was chipped off which wouldn't affect anything other than the look. The rim can be refinished for $275 which is not bad at all. However, I am ordering a new set of 4 since my original ones have around 14000km now. Can't really enjoy the car with thinking at a moment that tire will blow.

For Gods sake atleast do a couple hundred burnouts and/or doughnuts on the way to getting them replaced.
