Turn up Active Sound ?

I just want to know if there is a way to turn up the active sound. At the end of the day I don't really care who hears me coming or going its more about my experience inside the cabin. Additionally the ///M stock exhaust already sounds decent and has a fantastic kick back sound when you come off the throttle; in manual transmission its even more applied because of the shifting nature.

I am sold on Active Sound, I think its a great feature but there needs to be a turn it up option. Yes I am aware of the exhaust options but why spend thousands and lose the kick back when there might be an easier solution?

Not sure if I'd want to turn up a digitized sound. I'd rather hear the actual engine and exhaust.

I share your sentiment.

What is this kickback sound you are talking about?

This is why I want to hear all of the aftermarket exhausts in action. I really don't want to lose the fart and explosion sounds from the car. Love that! Worried that aftermarket will affect it. (Can anyone with akra or eisenmann comment?)

As far as active sound, I agree it would have been much better for BMW to include an on/off, or even a variable volume setting. Then any naysayers could simply turn it off. Quite un-German of them not to actually. For God's sake, you can adjust the headlight delay after turning the car off by individual second increments.

Did anyone ever figure out if active sound can be coded on/off?

Some call it the fart or explosion, like a deep boom sound. Once break-in is done I am never shifting below 5k rpm.

That sound from the exhaust you're referring to is even more pronounced with this Meisterschaft. Still sounds very german. Referring to the active sound, I cant say I've ever really heard it. I thought there would be at least an on/off in idrive somewhere.

Got the Eisenmann Race mufflers and have preserved the "fart" AND hear the real exhaust in the cabin, just enough now.

What fuse to pull?

With all this discussion, I want to experiment with the active sound system and understand (from one of the first C&D articles) that it can be deactivated by pulling a fuse. Anybody have the reference or already know which fuse?

IMHO, in cabin sound quality (exhaust) is my biggest criticism of the car.

BTW, seems Audi is doing the same thing.....

TIA

Glad to hear the farting continues after exhaust swap.

I believe pulling the fuse will result in the entire audio system to be disabled
Attached is information on ASD and how it ties into the car's electrical system
(note that ASD will be on regardless whether you have the radio turned on/off)

Nice to know - any drone challenges with this setup?

Sweet, I am highly considering the Eisenmann, really want to hear it in person.

I like the Active Sound idea - I barely notice it. I thought I would like Porsche's setup but the issue I have with it is that its a lot of "engine" and not enough exhaust. So while the sound is amazing and pronounced I was missing the exhaust gargles and farts..

In the December 2011 "Automobile" issue where they feature the M5, they sat that fuse #200 is the one that controls the active sounds. Haven't tried it because I kinda like hearing what everyone else is hearing when I'm driving!!

Yup it's a 40amp fuse ... but as I said in the post above you'll also loose the entire audio system if you pull this fuse

No. You won't. I pulled my fuse while trying different exhausts and had no issues whatsoever.

Hmm interesting , must have changed something from 2012 to 2013 as on older models it did disable the audio/sound system.
Btw you can also just pull the ASD module located in the trunk , this will also retain the audio system/sound and only remove ASD all together

There was a slight revision to the Active Sound module but the change was minor and not something that seems to have changed the behavior you've described. The M5 Technician Training Manual doesn't mention complete disablement of the audio system.

Yes we only found out by "accident" that one can unplug the ASD module without any (at least initial) side effects. Ie audio system fully functional , no codes/errors etc.
I'd think BMW does not officially documents/endorse disabling/removing ASD hence they won't support an official procedure for it

Disable ASD through recoding

Hello,

I just found out another method to disable the ASD module without physically removing it and without pulling the fuse. There's a special ASD configuration that may be modified using E-Sys:
Open the ASD module and change
3000 ASD-Configuration - Funktionen - Baureihe to F021.
Now the module thinks you're driving a F21 model and doesn't activate itself. This is working perfectly, I did it on my own M5 because the ASD really disturbed me.

If you only want to change the sound, you may play with the 'Motor' setting and insert e.g. 'N57D30' so the module thinks you're the owner of a Diesel engine...

Best regards

On my 13 M5 the fuse removal doesn't deactivate radio.
