I used to hear it quite abit on my 2011 model but the new one I can't say I have heard it even once. There must be a way to code the volume of it so we can turn it up even if it is just to see what it is about. I think if it's there it's too discrete.

Pumping fake engine noises through the radio just seems a bit tacky.
Have you driven a car with it? Honestly, I don't care if it is fake. I love the way it sounds. Putting on a louder exhaust is not going to help with the amount of sound insulation in these cars. So, if you aren't in a climate where you can drive around with your windows down all the time, this is a better solution than increasing the decible outside.

All BMW has done is replace the aural stimulus that they have taken away with all the sound insulation. And I think they got it just right. This is going to be done with hybrid and electric vehicles as well. In fact, they are creating external soundtracks for pedestrian safety.

And, as an aside, I have heard that you can change the active sound characteristic through coding.

Yes. If you drive in S3 and down shift at 3k+ revs it rev matches. I'm running Eisen Race and it sounds awesome.

Ahh...thanks. I only use her at weekends and with our current weather (UK) you can't really press the pedal.

I knew it had to be in S mode like the M3, but I guess I'm gearing down way too late.

Cheers matey

Active Sound as BMW calls it is here to stay: several car makers are now using as similar method, even in otherwise "regular" cars.

Bought my M5 last weekend. I can't even tell there's active sound. I've tried hard to listen for it but can't tell it's there.

Does the radio have to be on?
Does it sound better with the B/O system...

Any thoughts...Thank you
I drove my 2013 F10 M5 for 18K in a year and never noticed any artificial noise, to me it was like it never existed. I think this sound thing is overrated as it is negligible.

You want noise...roll the window now and turn the radio off....
