So that means there are many people who can afford to throw away several thousand dollars in taxes and depreciation after only a few months of ownership.
Great point I know 2 people that are selling for the sake of change it up.

Just makes me a little nervous to jump in. Appreciate any input.
I suspect that there a number of people who purchased M5's that have the financial means to switch cars often . They take the depreciation hit and move on to the next new car experience . This doesn't mean that there is anything wrong with the M5 , in these cases it simply means "been there, done that" time to move onto the next great car.
If this is the case you would find an equal number of both bmw and mb for sale that are in the same price range. fiscally it is the same demographic.

I think dealers way overestimated the demand for this car. part of the reason why I didn't wait for a post-lci was because the local dealer (and there are 4 bmw dealers in greater Boston) had 7 in their inventory and I'm sure they don't want to have such surplus.

I've never shopped for an mb, but I can't imagine that there are 7 e63 amgs sitting on their showroom floor waiting to be sold. also Maybe the price per gallon does affect the upper middle class and upper 1% to push for a Tesla or a car that does not get 17 mpg

Must also be #1 in dumbest people per capita. Who, even if millionaires buys a car, does 1000 miles in it and sells it?

My theory.....BMW give incentives for individual dealers that sell x many M5's M6's etc per quarter. Just about every UK dealer has an ex BMW owned M5 too. If they don't sell enough of them naturally, they buy them anyway to get the lucrative kick back from BMW AG. Sold with low miles at good discount.

This point has stronger validity with every passing month as well. Below is a good article released yesterday about Tesla finally turning a profit for the 1st quarter of 2013. Tesla production is starting to catch up to demand. Turns out that there may be a lot more 1%'ers who would rather opt to buy a $100,000 Tesla Model S, which can outperform an F10 M5 from 0-100mph and not spend any gas doing it. Also consider some of the super rich celebreties and such who all own Toyota Prius's not because they want to save a buck or two on gas, but because it's the trendy thing to do. Even I have to admit that the Tesla Model S looks semi-exotic. Owing to the poor sales of the $50,000 version of the Model S, I now see another reason why there may be so many more F10 M5's sitting on dealer showroom floors. I see more and more Tesla Model S's here in SoCal every month.

In the future I predict that their will be more battles over sales between high end Gasoline Luxury Sedans and Tesla Electric Sedans.

Indeed

I know a few wealthy people. I find they are typically the shrewdest types and are less inclined to be decadent, especially with cars. One I know has a stable of exotic cars. He buys something new and finds he doesn't quite like driving it, but can't bear to part with it at a huge loss, so adds it to the collection and buys something else. He will still drive it every now and then just to justify the purchase

As a counterpoint to the wealthy Americans willing to throw away their cash on depreciation, we also have the other American who over-extedns to get their car and then can't afford to stay in it. Just saying.

Trading UP?

Personally, I have never seen anything like this current state of fickle, status conscious, socially reactive, cocktail hour trending, etc., when it comes to the current F10 M5. In my area, I am friends with the Service Manager and the Finance Mgr. who constantly tell me the latest story of who is trading in and out of the M5. I hear about the Doctor who has a stable of cars that gets into an M5 and 700 miles later, trades for an M6. This same MD is now tired of his M6 and his wife has her sights on an M6 vert. This just goes on and on business owners, MD's, trust fund babies, etc., that have nothing better to do than drive the latest status symbol.

Reminds of the NFL draft and all of the back door dealing except for the players are wearing jerseys and their worth is generally obvious. The waters will calm and the true believers will be left standing.

BMW saturated the market with these cars. Same thing happened with the E90 M3. I bought my 2008 pre LCI E90 M3 for $51K on a $71K sticker. Car was brand new, but had been sitting on the lot for 9 months. Now dealers are selling M3's near sticker and the low mileage E90's are still in the mid to low $40's.

Just picked up my M5 and got a great deal on it. BMW threw a bunch out on the market since they will have to stop production for the LCI change over.

I also think more than a few people are intimidated by the car judging by the number of discussions about AWD, traction control and the like.

In comparison, there are zero E63's in that same area and only 2 in the US (used 2013 vehicles). 9 if you include 2012.

A new/used search of the USA for both yields 51 E63's and 260 M5's. Were there just that many more M5's produced?

My plan is to drive both, but I just thought the numbers were a little odd given the similarity in the vehicles.

as far as the e63's go, probably because very few people give a shit about the e63, thus very few bought them to begin with, which would then explain why there are much much fewer used ones for sale. when so many m5's are sold, only natural that some people are not going to like it and sell.

when i sold my cls63 i noticed lots of those were up for sale as well... cls - much nicer vehicle than the e63 - more of them probably sold. etc...

This is the answer.
There are so few used E63 because no one brought them to begin with.

completely agree. The CLS63 killed off demand for the E63 because they are priced so close, but the CLS63 is much nicer.

It's all subjective. I've owned 2 E63's never like the CLS63, hence never bought one.

A little late to post, but trust me, you do NOT need to test drive the 2013 M5 to know that you'll enjoy it. Last week, I had an impromtu race from a red light against what I think was a 2012 Corvette. It was all he could do to keep up with me, and that was with my car in Auto M mode, mid level acceleration. When I eased up because the street that I was on usually has a lot of cops, he was so pissed that he cut me off!! It's worth every penny to enjoy that!! Used or new, it's worth it!!
