Like others, I actually tried drifting an M5 on that very skid pad with Johann in the passenger seat. It's not as easy as it looks. Even with Johann patiently instructing me, I never made a complete circle, more like 2/3...ok half way around . Johann makes it look easy because he has refined his skills and has lots of practice. And yes, some drivers just get a "feel" for a car and road conditions better than others. So I say, good cause and congrats on the record. Also congrats to BMW Performance School for sponsoring the event.
The challenge and the record could be set by many drivers, including several at the Performance Center and any number of vehicles are up to the abuse. However, give credit to the guy and the machine that actually set the record. |

Email from Johan
Johan just sent out an email to his contacts this morning. The email contained the following comments about the drift record as well as these pictures:
"Thanks for all the congrats and support. What a day! I am proud of Saturday for many reasons. Obviously, I am proud for the new Guinness Book of World Record Drift, 51.278 miles (82.506 kilometers), but more importantly for the friends and sponsors who were able to attend, for the opportunity to give hot lap rides after the record drift and all the money that was raised for the BMW Charity Pro Am. This would not have been possible without the support of the BMW Performance Center and crew! Wow, the day went by so fast! Here are the most common questions that I was asked after the event: What made you stop at 51.278 miles? Our goal was initially 40 miles, while out there we decided to go for 50 miles and then when things got cleared to drift on the big corner with smokey tires, we got a little over 51 miles. I had to leave some time as I had promised some supporters of the event a hot lap in the BMW M3 before the day was over. We had fuel to go another 43 miles, so we are ready for more next time ;-). How many sets of tires did you use? One set, the guys at the BMW Performance Center are great and master many skills, but changing tires while the car is drifting is a skill that they have not mastered yet ;-). This record was for the Guinness Book of Records for one continuous drift. What kind of tires did you use? Continental Sports Contacts front 255/30/20 rear 295/30/20. Great tires and gave me incredible grip for the whole drift. Did you get dizzy?….no, I could walk a straight line perfectly ;-) How many laps did you drift on the skid pad? 322 laps Was the M5 stock? Yes completely, just changed the oil and checked the fluids before the sideway driving started. Pretty amazing car. The car is now on display at the BMW Charity Pro Am tournament and still has the tires on from the drift record. Tomorrow I leave for Texas to run the US Formula 1 track in Austin for the first race in the Sneed for Speed World Challenge MINI. When I return, I will have more pictures, links and a video from the World Record Drift Event. Thanks again! Until next time! Johan." |

Anyone dismissing this because it was done on a wet track should really try any kind of endurance sport. Doing something requiring ANY level of skill for ≈2 hours is a feat. Try balancing a broom on your hand for two hours. Maintaining a drift is harder than that, and I'd be surprised if half the people here could do it for 2 hours straight.
Maintaining slip angle in a car around a skidpad for ≈2 hours really is a feat, no matter how wet the track was. The water saves the tires, and definitely is one of the only things even making this possible -- I'm willing to bet you'd see tire failure well before 2 hours of continuous wheel spin -- but that doesn't diminish the focus and skill required to maintain the drift continuously for that length of time.

While it's great to break a world record, you guys do realize that this was for charity purposes right? No need to take it so seriously (aimed at pro drifters from behind their computers)

Me too. He was a great teacher and at the end of the weekend took us on a hot lap on drifted around that same wet track.

Congrats to Johan - I drifted (to nowhere near his skill level) with him at M school, great guy!
As far as complaints about the wet track, no tire would last for 50 miles sideways dry. Johan would be the first to tell you he (and any other instructor) could likely have done this wet or dry. The money went to charity and brought some publicity for BMW with a few nice people involved. Can't we appreciate that? |

"Back in February at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, Abdo “Dado” Feghali set a new Guinness World Record by getting sideways in a stock Chevrolet Camaro SS fitted with an EasyDrift system for over 10 minutes, covering a distance of 6.95 miles (11.18 km)." NO set of tires could last 50 miles drifting on dry pavement.....

Another find from a 2011 page...
The world record for longest drift is now in the hands of the Brits and the Germans. While the previous record was held by a good ol’ American boy in a Ford Mustang, the new record for longest drift was set yesterday by stunt driver Mauro Calo in his 2011 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG at Mercedes-Benz World in England. Calo managed to drift 7572 feet around MB World’s handling circuit before a blown rear-tire ended his 10,000 foot attempt early, albeit with the new world record. One would imagine a wet track would help the tires last longer, making it easier for the car to survive an almost two-mile drift, although making control of the car that much more difficult. Read more: http://wot.motortrend.com/video-find...#ixzz2TkyeOWLa Follow us: @MotorTrend on Twitter | MotortrendMag on Facebook I think Johann has blown away any previous records.
