Artificial Noise

I was reading that the M5's use artificial noise of the engine through the radio. I did a search on the forum and did not see much about the subject. Can you turn it off?
Does the radio have to be on?
Does it sound better with the B/O system...

Any thoughts...Thank you

Turned it off through coding a while ago. But it is always on, and I noticed it most in the upper RPM range.

Active Sound is a non-issue

I have to say that I thought this was a horrible and tacky concept but in reality, in my experience, it's barely discernible. In fact, after a couple weeks of ownership I question whether or not it's even functional in my car. And if anything I would actually like to "turn it up" a little. (I can see why people seek louder exhaust systems. Even CP exhaust leaves a lot to be desired.)

Weird because I test drove a manual 2014 M5 about a month ago and really noticed the sound more.

I don't believe that B&O has any effect versus HK or base sound systems.

there some question in mind regarding this "active sound"

-where does the system get the noise from?
-if we modify into aftermarkets parts, will the sound be different from inside?

I think active sound is a brilliant idea and I wish that there was a way to amp it up.

Creating more physical sound, eg. Exhaust is just begging for police attention.

For me the ultimate would be realistic fake sound inside and no sound outside.

Why because I'm smart enough to know how to drive fast and not got caught?

Driving a high performance car like the M5 is very much an exercise in the art of deception.

Slightly off Topic...sorry OP:

Does the M5 have the 'throttle blips' when gearing down like the M3?. I can't say I've heard it yet?

Would also save money spent on post-factory exhaust & works well in 'next-gen' tech cars such as i8.

I would still want sound outside as it warns others of your presence.

Also works well in diesels, etc. by cancelling out unwanted cabin noises.

i'm inclined to agree... but you guys over the pond have 'noise police' in certain States don't you? so I can see why Stealth would say that. or are you campaigning for the tree huggers now?

I prefer it be loud outside and quiet inside... until you open the window and want to hear the thunder...

Does his user name mean something?

If he indeed flyes a stealth fighter, then it might be that he finds the stealth approach suitable for his car as well...

IMHO, a stealth fighter is very "manly"

Well, we also have a B-1 pilot, so why not a stealth pilot?

(And B-1 Pilot, actually is a B-1 pilot )

Ive started to notice a low pitched whining wen in lower gears and also wen downshifting, but i believe it only happens in comfort. Guess I never noticed it before since i havent driven in comfort until winter time but im convinced it is the active sound.

Another member suggested having it coded off, which I may do, but then i may regret not having active sound. Anyone here compare how big the difference was?

It'll be great if we can have different settings for Active Sound : Comfort, Sport, & Sport+, that we can play around with.

Sorry, active sound just seems lame to me. I'm not sure what the heck BMW was thinking on this one. I suspect this is once again the result of attempting to reconcile the conflicting personalities of the M5. I think they would have been best to leave off the active sound and just go for a really nice sounding exhaust. When you want to hear it more clearly, open the windows. Pumping fake engine noises through the radio just seems a bit tacky.

I think the reasoning behind active sound was pretty well explained in the press release for the M5 (coping with exterior and interior noise regulations but also having a decent soundtrack in the cabin). As well as the fact that others also do some sort of interior sound enhancement.
