New US Brake Squeak SIB for M5/M6

BMW USA have released "SIB 34 06 14" to deal with brake squeak on non-carbon equipped M5/M6.

Dealer will check the "balance weights" on the brake pads and replace the pads should the weights be loose.

If weights ok pads and discs will be checked for other faults including thermal stress.

Interesting. I can see smiles on a lot of M5 owners faces now. Hope this works. Now if every other sports car mfg would do the same.

This could be simply to placate the customer.

Though, hopefully it does work and doesn't reduce braking performance.

I've never heard of balance weights for brake pads. Is there a picture of the BMW "balance weights" on their brake pads? I have used pads and new pads in the garage with a BMW part number and there is no sign of any added weights. Of course my never having heard of them doesn't mean they don't exist, but I'd love to see what BMW identifies as a "balance weight" for a brake pad. Perhaps their language in the SIB doesn't do well from the German to English?

I think this is BMW speak for replacing the brakes with softer pads (weight is lighter).

So is this fix available now? If I go to the dealer tomorrow and reference SIB... Would they perform the fix?

Well, there is such a thing, on my e92 with the brembo package at the rear I have had weights on the pad. Maybe that what this was for ?

At the ends of the pads you can clearly see the shiny metal weights sticking out.
When I mounted the brakes the first time I wanted to take them of, but then I thought ..... may be not.

Interesting, thanks for the picture. I was puzzled by a small wire that was routed to the left front brake caliper and the right rear caliper on the M5. They clip into a small recess on the brake pad, just as those 'weights' do in your picture. They are sensors for brake wear. Pretty fancy, all I'd known of was the old metal clip that would make a screeching noise when the pad was in need of replacement.

Is there any chance you can attach the document? I can't find it...

Hi

Pads used on Brembo type calipers have a balance weight fitted on each corner.
These may have come loose on certain cars causing vibrations that make the noise.
They are also sometimes called "Vibration absorbers"

The dealer will remove the pads and check the weights as a first step under the SIB

Yes, just quote the SIB number "SIB 34 06 14" to any BMW USA dealer.

Brake wear sensors have been used on BMW's an many other European cars for decades, but not many people seem to know.
Even the 1976 E12 5 Series has them

Most current BMW sensors are 2 phase sensors, allowing the onboard computer to estimate the pad life remaining more accurately.

Thanks for this, it makes perfect sense but I've never come across them before. My 11/2012 build M5 doesn't have them, and the replacement pads don't have them. Why would they be on some M5 and not others?

My service manager told me that the electronic pad wear sensors will indicate pad replacement at about 3mm of pad thickness.
