What kind of BMW would you get a first time driver?

So my sister just turned 15 and she's going to get her school permit here this summer and obviously needs a car.

I just recently got my dad to get rid of his Honda for a 3-series, so he's seen the light and wants my sister to get a BMW as well.

Not really sure what to get her. She likes the 2-series, but I am pushing her towards a CPO 328i for around $35k.

The X3 is also another option I'm considering. Any others I should be looking at? The budget is around $40k.

X1 for utility and safety (plus they are cheaper than a 3-Series) or a 228i vert because she's a female teen. Good luck.

For 15 years old student driver, only give her the slowest available vehicle. Only then can she move up to more powerful cars once she's mastered the basics.

I think there's a limit to this though. It reaches a point where a car is too slow to be safe - even experienced drivers occasionally find themselves in a situation where a bit of power is needed to pull away / get into a gap etc.

This ^

Why not lease though? Get a 228 convertible, or coupe.

Either a 228i or a 328i. Some like the ride height of an SUV. My wife and sister both always prefer SUVs to cars just because they say they have better visibility and feel safer in one. For me, if I were to recommend a newbie, my recommendation would be a car with a stick shift like how I learned to drive with a clutch pedal. It just makes a new driver a bit more mechanically cognizant at the cost of a steeper learning curve.

Depending on where she lives, I would consider something with x-drive. The 328xi i think is a great choice.

Buy her a three-four year old, low mile, 328i sedan.

They are a good boring school car and she can run it through college without any mechanical issues.

Why are you concerned about CPO on a 3 Series? They are just transportation and are as reliable and as exciting as a Honda.

Also, why on earth would you have a $40,000.00 budget for a 15 year old's school car? You can buy nice reliable 3 Series all day long for $15k or less.

Any of those mentioned above AND w/ a manual transmission so her focus is on driving and cannot be distracted by texting or devices.

This is incredibly dumb. You want a 15 year old to start off on a BMW? What is she going to look forward to in her life for next steps if you start her this high? There is no reason that a 15 year old should be driving around something that nice. It should be a safe beater car that they can learn on.

Don't spoil them - be wise

That's one hell of a budget..probably aim for a previous shape 320i and keep the change..

I have to agree. Unless this is their budget with money they earned there is a 99% chance this is a bad idea haha. A 40k budget for a 15 year old, what will you do when it wrecks in a year or a few move her to a 60k budget? How much would it suck if you were driving a brand new 3 series loaded this year and then 2 years later it is totaled and this time the car payment has to come out of your pocket and you don't make enough to afford equally nice of a car? Going backwards is never fun just good for thought. I mean I guess if ya got it use it but I've seen children given 40k cars and unfortunately I haven't seen one of those turn out for the best... Hopefully this won't be the case, so good luck and keep us updated! My vote is for a very used 3 series if you guys are set on a BMW for a 15 year olds first car.
