My 1200 mile Service

Just had this service today, they changed the diff and engine Oils.
They now use the 0-30 Engine Oil for the M5 Engines here in the Uk, a few months ago they were using 5-30 which is not recommended by BMW, anyway I don;t know what Oil was in it but the engine feels quieter and smoother and warmed up in just 4 miles.

Source for where 5w-30 is not recommended? Did 700 miles post breakin with this oil as this is the ONLY oil German M-qualified dealerships use at the moment. Worked just fine in the 50-65F weather. When I get back to craptacuoar Texas, I will switch to 0w-40....

BMW germany recommend 0-30 mate thats why all the BMW dealers here have switched to it, that says it all does it not.

You can still use 5-30 or 0-40 it's your choice.
Funny thing is once warmed up 0W-40 is less viscous (heavier) than 5W-30.

PS) 50/65Dec F is NOT COLD.

I don't think 5W-30 does any harm but it takes ages to warm up with that oil.

Which 0W-40 are you planning to use? Why 0W-40 and not 0W-30?

I had my 1,200 mile service in August last year and they used 0W-30. In fact, I discussed it with the service guys before they did the service because I'd read that some UK dealers were putting the wrong oil in. The guys told me that BMW had made clear that they were to use 0W-30.

Listers have changed from 5-30 too 0-30 only a few months ago, and said BMW had given them a "Directive", to change Oil stocks.
So some dealers have been putting in the wrong "recommended" grade but a grade that would do.

It can be a bit worrying how lax some of the dealers can be about the m5. Mine's done at Cooper's who are fairly good.

Glad you're enjoying the car.

Only 5,084. In just over a year. The beast has done a lot of city miles, mixed with some great country blasts. It's a great feeling when you emerge from slow traffic and nail it with a press of the M1. I'm actually loving every minute of being in the car, even in gridlock which really says something about the quality of the car - it handles every situation amazingly well. Long live the m5

Blackfriars. Canary Wharf is very nice - also, the main car parks are rammed with exotic cars.

Right now Castrol Edge Syntec European Formula SAE 0w-40 A3/B4. It is API SN, and a BMW long life-01 oil.

I was planning to use the 40 because of how hot it gets here in Texas, and it is readily available here (would have to amazon order the 0W-30). Nicely, I can use this in my wife's car as well. I will just need to let it warm up a bit in my car to reach optimum flow.

Of the many, many oil explanation threads, I like this one best: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/tec...copy-save.html

On a good note, my M5 hasn't burned a drop of oil in 1800 miles. I think the 5500RPM and less break-in for the first 20 miles may have helped. I stayed in compliance with BMW's break-in rules, but still let it rev under demand through the first 4 gears right off from the Welt.

Hello B-1 Pilot -
I just had my 1,200 mile done two days ago and I had burned NO oil. I did follow the factory break advice to the letter. They say they change the chip after the 1,00 mile; however I could tell no difference. That said I've not done a WOT as of yet. So maybe then I'll notice something? I think it just changes the chip to allow a speed over 150mph?
