Just bought an F10 M5 competition!

This is my second M5. My supercharged e60 m5 has treated me well, so I'm hoping to continue the tradition.

Are there any must-do maintenance items for 50-60k mile F10 M5? I plan on putting on larger turbos & straight piping it once all the maintenance stuff is ironed out. Thanks all!

Congrats. What's the history and previous maintenance on the vehicle? What maintenance needs to be ironed out? Larger turbos on an unknown engine is risky. My $2C

https://carsandbids.com/auctions/35DaQZ5Y/2016-bmw-m5

is the link. It seems well taken care of. Previous owner took it to a shop once and put only 5k miles on it.

I've been reading here non-stop, and I am reading everything from bearing issues, dct issues (thought they were bullet proof?) to misfires, etc. Do I need to start with new bearings and plugs/coils? What's the normal routine for the f10 m5 to bring it upto top shape? I know whats needed for e60 m5 like the back of my hand. Just trying to weed through all the anecdotal problems to find common issues so I can start addressing them. Thanks again!

Welcome! Car looks great. Well spec'd and great color combo. I think the Stock turbos are good for close to 800whp, which is pushing the limits of what I'd be comfortable running with stock internals, so budget a rebuild if you don't do that before going with bigger turbos. Also traction is a real issue at that power level. If you upgrade to stickier/larger tires, you risk breaking axles, driveshafts, diff mounts, etc. Point here is that bigger turbos ideally would be accompanied with many supporting mods.

Nice one you found there with CC too.First job I did on mine was to C wrap the side vent surrounds.

DCT clutch will be your first weakpoint. And the upgrade options are not looking very good currently.

Congrats!! Coils, plugs, cold air intake, down pipes and stage 2 flash tune of your choice. It’s fast enough with that setup and still reliable.
I notice also in the add they said they replaced the rotors, but according to the receipt they just did pads and sensors. Rotors are about 4K a piece.

thanks all. The more I'm reading, I'm getting sense that F10 has many potential points of failure once the power level goes up. I think I'll leave it stock. I'll do coils, plugs, and probably methanol injection for safety. and call it a day!

I already have ISTA but I'm picking up the car this Saturday. Is there a good OBD handheld unit that is good for the F10 M5? Thanks!

Plenty of guys do intake/exhaust and a stage 1/stage 2 tune and not break anything. Its past that where things start getting to their limits.

Honestly it comes down to the driver as well. If you think your going to neutral drop, launch control and drag race this platform, it will let you know quickly that it doesnt like those things lol.

On the other hand, spirited drives, 60-130 pulls and the ocassional "50 roll" you wont have any problems with regular maintenance.

DP was one of the best bolts on I did.

that's what I love to hear! thanks for the feedback. yea I don't like shocking the driveline. so intake & dp/exhaust with mild tune on 91oct making about 600whp'ish sounds reasonable for a long term reliability? any solid tunes you recommend?

how's exhaust fume with straight pipe? does it get inside cabin at all? I love valvetronic exhausts in most of my cars. I really like the on-demand straight pipe sound.

I ordered Carly, and I didn't know it ships from Germany. looks like 2-3 weeks wait.

I have Carly too, you do have to buy a subscription but it works for simple things and try’s to get you answers for faults if any.

I ran BM3 stage 1 last year with just front mount intakes. Car was silly fast lol.
Did DP’s wrapped, turbo blankets, CSF intercoolers, charge pipes and BM3 stage 2 last December right before I garaged for the winter. You will get fume smell with windows down, it’s not over powering but it is there. Love the sound and turbo spool with DP. Car came with M Performance/Akrapovic exhaust so I left that alone. Now it’s scary fast lol. We have 93 here so both my tunes are on 93 tunes.

excellent! BM3 sounds like a safe tune. No CEL, DCT, or driveline issues with stg 2 BM3 tune on straight pipe? how many miles did you run with the tune? F10 M5 is going to be my daily--so I just need it to be little scary when I punch it on an empty freeway but mostly reliable and well mannered in traffic--I plan on rotating it with my e60 m5 for commuting.

I drive mine daily to work and went with a catted downpipe and a tune from BPM Sport. Mike is a very nice guy and responsive to his cell phone. I've been cat-less on another car and didn't care for the smell so I decided to keep cats. I haven't had it on the dyno but it feels faster than my 650hp e39 m5. What are your e60 dyno #'s?

As long as you're gentle on it m5bbq should be plently safe. There's prob people on here that are on BM3 Stage 2 fbo and over 100k miles that are daily drivers. Just be gentle on the clutches, don't launch it etc

ecb, it's supposed to be 675 crank hp with my supercharger kit. i got it retuned with header, primary cat delete, and exhaust-probably at least 700hp crank now.

I took off my cat to hear the v10 sing but ended up putting my secondary cat back in due to the smell getting in the cabin even with the windows closed. it was also getting into the house.

will be doing all the maintenance shortly. looking forward to adding parts as the weather cools down.

m5rick, what do you mean by "c wrap" the side vents? that's the only part of the m5 I don't like--the chrome outline on the side vents. Looks like autozone special. I was just going to swap it to carbon ones with single chrome center stake.

Have had no issues and been tuned and modded for just under 9k miles. It’s mostly a weekend car but the last two weeks my kids have been using my truck so I have been driving the M5 daily and it hasn’t skipped a beat.

The best is in comfort mode you would never know you had 700hp under your right foot, but when you double click the M button, everybody knows lol.

There is an options list when you flash BM3, basically asks you what mods you have and you check the corresponding boxes and flash away. I was terrified doing it my first time but have played with it a bit now and it works really well.

ok picked up the car. I got 900 mile to drive back. I got this error in the first 20 miles or so. Ex owner says he has never seen it. I'm just driving normal. I restart the car, and it seemed to be cleared. Everything else seems ok. just got some transmission whihy noise which based on my readings may be normal for f10 m5? I'm getting about 21mpg with 100% freeway cruise at 108f ambient with ac cranked up.
any advice would be appreciated. thanks all
