Exclamation "Production Begins" on my car...but,

I have a hard time believing this because I just ordered my car this past Saturday. I did get an email yesterday though with the VIN # that my car was assigned. And now on the BMWUSA website it says that the production has started and below are all my options and colors I selected. Could this be true? I only ask because I've never had a custom ordered car, and because originally it was supposed to be in production about a month from now. Thank you

It's surprising that your order went to production so quick, but I guess it's possible you got lucky and picked up a slot after another buyer dropped out with a similar build. What colors/options did you go with?

BTW, good luck with the new F10 M5. I don't know if you recognize my handle but I'm the guy who bought your snow tires when you sold your first E60 M5.

Correct. Good to see you joining the F10 M5 family. My Monte Carlo Blue/Silverstone M5 is on a boat due into port tomorrow. Now we just need those damn replacement pumps!!

That's a very popular combination (SG/SO), so I stand by my theory that you slid up the list when someone canceled their order.

I think mine will come with a good pump then! lol. I hope yours turns out well. So from the day that it says "in production" how long until the car usually arrives?

Tough for me to say. I did European Delivery, so I don't know first hand the timing for a US Delivery order but I would guess 5 to 6 weeks. From start of production I believe it takes about 2 weeks to build and move the car up to Bremerhaven, then 2 weeks coming across the Atlantic on the boat, then 1 to 2 weeks to clear the VPC and make it to your dealer.

I ordered my car on 9-11 and the next day it went to status 112. Today it went to status 150 which means production will start within a week. I am jealous on how fast yours went, good for you. As for our concern, it would appear we are getting the corrected oil pumps. However, my logical part of my brain remains skeptical. If they had a bunch of "good" oil pumps at the factory, shouldn't they have prioritized them and shipped them immediately to the U.S? Anyway, we're told things are going as planned, I just hope they are not blowing smoke up our asses to keep us happy for now.

Not necessarily. I was talking to my CA earlier today about this whole situation and he made 2 commets that make me believe you are likely OK:

1. He commented about how expensive it is to shut down a production line. Particularly since the M5 is produced on the same line as regular 5 series cars, so it's a double whammy.

2. BMW is already incurring significant monitary and reputational costs due to this issue. They probably don't want to risk losing a bunch of orders because of a production delay. I was very surprised to learn that of the 686 M5s affected by the recall, only 2/3 of them are owned by customers. The other 1/3 are still in delear inventory. That's a pretty startling statistic on a very recently released M vehicle.

Just some assumptions on my part, but since you have not been told there will be a delay I would assume everything is moving forward.

That makes sense as well. Thank you for your insight. I'm happy and relieved that I can stop worrying about the anticipated time. Now, I will have to endure waiting for the car to get here like I'm 8 years old waiting for Christmas morning. AGS, I'm not mistaken you are waiting for your F10 to reach the US and receive a corrected oil pump, good luck to you on that.

Thanks. Yup, it's due in port tomorrow. Normal timing would put delivery sometime mid to late next week. My CA heard from his service manager that the pumps should be available "within 2 weeks", so hopefully I'm looking at no more than a week or so delay. Still sucks!

You're not crazy, I'm the same way. I will probably be checking winds, currents, and how many knots the ship is doing. I'm 32 years old but when it comes to cars I'm like a child.

It's pretty simple. This thread is a sticky at the top of the "F10 M5 Pricing, Delivery, Tracking and European Delivery" page:

http://f10.m5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=680284

It's very detailed and walks through the entire production and delivery process. Take a look and let me know if you have any questions.

You need to keep in mind what "production started" means in BMW AG speak. You're thinking your car is marching down the assembly line but in fact the first steps in BMW's production process are production planning, scheduling and ordering components: seats, wheel/tire assemblies, etc.

If you want to know exactly where your car is in the production steps you need to know the status - a numerical code that indicates what step of production your car is, ie, 112, 150.... Your car will be in 112 for a long time and only 150 and past for about a week.

Info available from your CA

No, you may call the BMW ED Dept in NJ and ask one of the nice girls there "what status" your car is in - just provide them your production number or VIN. Your CA has the same information available online.

1-800-831-1117 is the main production status line
or the ED department can be reached at 1-800-932-0831

It's all in the thread on top of this very forum ....

Thank you. The production will be done October 2nd. That seems incredibly fast to me. 9 days from placing the order, which was a saturday. So really just 7 working days.

+1. Count me in this club. 39 y/o, and I have been tracking the ship that will be carrying my car, and it has not even hit Bremerhaven yet. It is going to be a LONG 24 day sail
