Probably 75% of MSRP if you sell privately.

Just for some context, in the UK you're probably looking at 25% hit from full retail as soon as you drive away a new M5.

Yeah but when we quote numbers here we are talking depreciation from prices excl. VAT.

BTW is what you say really true? In that case I can't imagine why people don't buy current model used M5s with less than 2000 miles on them. I would buy that at 75% of MSRP and wouldn't touch a new one.

Here depreciation is slower because of the behavioral dynamic I just mentioned.

I took a 20% hit for a car that was 10 months old (3000 Miles) at time of negotiating the trade in. At that time the discounts on new 2013's was $14,000. So pretty tough for anybody wanting to trade in. All the dealers I went to were pretty firm at $85k, playing with the numbers I was eventually able to get $97k only because I had ordered an individual car with high mark ups I am guessing.

I paid $80k for my 2013 M5 (alpine white, full merino leather, all options except night vision and carbon brakes) with 6k miles and already had the whole front end clear bra done. They started at $88k and eventually came down after a couple weeks.

Understood (thanks for info) - I was including 20% VAT.

Dealers will add their mark up to the trade in price (usually £4K for a BMW, but can vary & still price negotiable). The majority of used M5s with less than 2000 miles will be ex-demos and if within the 90 day write down period, may not be market price (the price will drop once the 90 days is reached and the demo must be sold).

As an example, UK currently has approved used LCI M5 with low spec - MCB/Blk with CP as only option, registered Nov 2013, 3600 miles and priced at £58995. Full retail (inc. VAT) new would have been just over £81000, so assuming it is not a demo with £4K mark up, that makes ~30% loss in 4 months. Most options will not add any value to a used car in UK (although may make it more marketable) - out of interest is that the same in NA?

http://www.approved.bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/...date_DESC|list

If a private buyer wants to come out of a new M5 v.soon after purchase the hit is likely to be around 25% from full retail value as a (barely) used M5 will not be as marketable as an ex-demo, so unless special circumstances apply, most dealers will offer low to ensure they can shift a nearly new car quickly (depends on what demos they are running and how close to the 90 days).

Obviously most of us here are negotiating large discounts to offset this - best I heard of was ~18% (not using employee discount) on a factory order LCI (prior to LCI launch), although the norm is probably nearer 10%.

New M5s are still very popular here. I guess some of us just prefer to buy new and accept the depreciation.

I checked Manheim as well before I purchased and decided that $80k was a good price when buying from a dealer and 6k miles in mint condition with all options except carbon brakes and night vision.

I prefer new too, but not wedded to it.

However what you call depreciation sounds like gap to trade-in value. I never accept trade-in value as a definition of value because I never trade-in car but sell direct to the next owner.

I prefer to take baths at home than at the dealership

I think new in the uk with large discount and until end of last year 0% finance was good value compared to used.

Back in 1998 we bought a 99 porsche boxter with 12k on the clock for I think 27k. After putting around 36k miles on the car, a 18 wheeler hit my wife on the freeway and totalled the car. The insurance paid us ALL our money back that we spent at the time of the purchase including our d payment. We lost no money except for the normal ownership costs. No way Bmw will hold its own like that which is sad. But it does tell me tat the P car hold value really well. At least in my situation it did.

The incentives on new M5s are killing resale. I've had mine posted for 2 months with little traction so I'm going to just keep it. But the 25% rule seems to hold true and whether you trade it in from the 1st month to the 12th month, they depreciation hit is almost the same.

I think this is the most accurate statement. Besides massive sentimental value, jlee's comment is also the reason why I have no plans to sell or trade. Once I saw the residuals back in the summer of 2012, I knew what I was getting myself into. In my opinion, the M5 has always been an undervalued car, which is both a good and bad thing.
