Cool F10 M5 Sounds Off Against E92 M3 (Exhaust Sound Comparison)

BIMMERPOST NEWS
F10 M5 Sounds Off Against E92 M3 (Exhaust Sound Comparison)
67
COMMENTS

Here is a brief but telling clip of the F10 M5's sounds versus that of the E92 M3. Both are powered by a V8, but the M5 features a 4.4L bi-turbo V8 pumping out 560hp while the M3 is powered by a 4.0L naturally aspirated 414hp V8. Video by, courtesy of, and thanks to ednet01.

While we've seen many of our worldwide members taking deliveries of their 2012 F10 M5, none have yet been delivered to North America. Canada should see the first deliveries in just weeks and while the US won't see the new M5 until the 2013 model year production begins in July (for Sept delivery), US pricing will be announced next week!

Disagree. A V8 should sound strong and deep like the m5. Sounds so much fuller and impressive.

M3 sounds empty and metallic compared back to back like this.

I appreciate the comparison, but I can't tell anything from that video. I have an M3, so I know what to listen for, but if I wasn't familiar with it, it just sounds like two cars revving.

M5 sounds better with the low/deep tone (don't like the crack/bang sound though).

Both cars are pretty tame sounding stock. Needs exhaust mods!

Wrong.
M motor's signature engine sound/exhaust note is that exact metalic, mechanical note from the current M3. E30 M3 had it, E36 + 46's Inline-6 had it, E34 M5 had it, E60 M5 had it(especially above 4500rpm).

I am not "criticizing" the new M5's exhaust in any way, but it surely sounds like a typical V8 toned down version...of course some straight pipe or aftermarket exhaust would fix it, but as stock vs stock M3 wins as the proper M motor sound.

already worrying about vacuum cleaner sound i expect from the future M turbo cars...

Different tones for different tastes. I still prefer the M3 as it revs way higher than the M5 and has that endless rev limiter feeling. The M5 has easily reached its rev limiter and lacks the racing sound. Maybe it has more growl though.

Sorry, but that was a stupid and extremely short video. They should have taken turns with more time between the revs. Reminded me of two idiot teens sitting in a parking lot at a Saturday night car show revving their engines.

Would be nice to see some acceleration comparisons. The M5 does have that weird fart sound on upshifts.

M3 sounds about right for the power it's making. M5 seems pretty tame when you think of a V8 with over 500 horse IMO. But yeah, this video is proof that money can't buy common sense, how are people supposed to compare the two when they rev together and only do it like one time lol

I don't think the F10 M5's will come close to this good. With or without aftermarket exhaust. It is just physically impossible with the turbos.

The M5 has a deeper sound to it.

Not sure why two of these cars are being compared. There is no replacement for N/A Euro V8+ sound.

Although M5 is now very balanced, it is not much more than a domesticated animal. Nice looking car with great figures on paper, but does not offer as much excitement as the E60.

Useless comparison. How about revving each car one by one instead of at the same time? I can't believe this is featured on the front page.

Couldn't agree more. Imagine how confusing this was on the iPhone speaker lol.
