Hissing Noise ?

I know there are a ton of "weird noise" threads on here but none have proven beneficial to my situation yet. My car is making some sort of high pitched hissing sound from around 700 - 2K RPM. The best way I can describe this high pitched hissing noise is that of a balloon being slowly deflated from the open part of it. I am thinking that it is some sort of leak from somewhere. This sound is very prominent when the car is cold. The sound slowly dissipates when the car is at operating temperature; however, I can still hear it time to time even then.

I hope someone can shed some light on this situation before I book an appointment with the dealership.

Thanks in advance! - Anthony

I read somewhere on here that a similar noise was from the sideview mirror housing. I tried to look for the thread, but failed. Just a thought... Or yes, it's snakes.

I read the thread on the mirror. I don't know if that is the case with me. The noise is more prominent when I shift and the RPM dips down around 2K.

I get a bit of a whistling noise, but its faint. It seems to only happen in colder weather.

Ive spent a lot of time on this low rpm noise. The best explanation I get from BMW is that is a result of high pressure fuel injectors and direct injection and has nothing to do with turbos or the mirrors. They say there is nothing we can do about the noise although I think it stems from the plastic housing on the injectors.

I had a similar problem. Mine was caused by a small exhaust leak where the downpipes meet the cat back. There is a small lead ring that helps seal the joint when they're bolted together. Once they replaced the ring the whistling stopped.

It wasn't easy to find. It took 3 visits for them to finally locate the issue.
