Oil cooler damaged while driving

Anyone on my Instagram already knows.

I was driving home late at night and ran over what appeared to be a cone in the middle of the road. It didn't feel like it did any damage. I was close to home so I kept driving.

About 5 minutes later when i was sitting at a stoplight I got an oil pressure light and a drive train malfunction(VANOS camshaft stuck code because theres no oil pressure). I pulled over immediately and turned the car off. When I got out oil was everywhere under the car.

Turns out my oil cooler line cracked where it enters the cooler. There was barely any oil left in the car.

My replacement cooler doesn't come in until Monday. Praying for no damage. If everything is ok then the worst part will be cleaning the entire underside of the car.

The f90 guys talk about this issue more often and buy cooler guards. May have to do that.

I have a couple of cones left behind on the street by roadworkers and I use one to stop people turning into driveway to turn their car around. These cones are tough rubber and can do a lot of damage if hit especially to the lie down oil cooler close to the ground, hope your engine is ok.

Anyone have any advice starting her up?

I plan on fixing the cooler, putting in cheap oil and starting the car. It should still be in limp mode. Let oil get to everywhere. Then turning the car off and clearing the codes. Then see if she starts normal and runs normal. Warm the car up. Then change the oil.

Engine flush? Additives?

Use cheap oil sure but I wouldn't use the very thin flushing oil in this engine and check the old oil filter when draining that all is well there.

turns out insurance will cover it past my 1000$ deductable. Only problem now is I would have to find a shop/engine builder. I do all my own work so I don't know any.

I think you'll be alright as you pulled over as soon as you got the OP warning.

What 'cheap' oil are you going to put in first.

fitted the new cooler. she started right up. cleared the drive train malfunction and started her again and it stayed gone.

i will drain the oil and check everything tonight. and probably again after a hundred miles. hopefully no glitter in the oil.

i may have turned her off in time to not do any damage!

I think you're ok.

Sometime ago a chap with an M5 not far from me had a huge nail embedded in his oil cooler while driving.
He had to carry on a bit to find a safe place to stop in which time the engine was trashed. The car was insured to the hilt in such a way that he got a full value payout handing the car to insurers and then getting a nearly new M3 in Santorini Blue if I remember correctly.
It's on here about 3 years back.

yeah it seemed like most of the similar stories ive read didnt end well. I think the common theme is whether or not you turn the car off right away.
