It is limited at 170 mph here, not sure about US. I know that if it were to be not limited it would max out at around 195 mph.

US cars are computer limited to 155mph. European cars are as well, but can be coded to increase this limit to 190mph.

I dont know what the car would do if all limits were coded out, but some on the forum have indicated that the car will do 200.

As Boss330 has found out through AC Schnitzer's testing, there are in fact two speed limiters on the F10 M5. One on the engine and one on the transmission. The one on the engine can be increased to 190mph through the Euro Drivers Package. If you take the limiter off of the engine then the transmission will limit the top speed to about 196mph. Last I heard, AC Schnitzer's was still trying to remove the DCT Limiter.

Too many damn limiters on this car. I wonder if it is limited like this to protect the transmission or something.

It's limited to protect your ASS!

j/k - I'd rather have it delimited as well, but .. prob not that big a deal in the end in the US anyway..

Yes, in the US not really an issue. BUT... I will be picking this thing up via ED and hitting the Autobahn and the 'Ring. It would be nice to have the ability to go over 155 if I had a chance to...in a 'safe' manner of course.

And please... No comments about break in. I will bed the brakes within the first hundred miles if not less. I will run through the gears at varying vehicle and engine speeds for the first 500+ miles. It will be broken in just the same way I've done with MANY vehicles of all power and performance levels.
Plus... I lease. And it's under warranty. I am going to enjoy my time in Europe with this beast!
Rant over.

I hit the limiter on the autobahn, but really didn't have much more room for more speed anyways.

You won't get anywhere near the limiter on the 'ring... Think I hit about 140 around gantry.

Check the link in my sig for more info

B-1. I've read your trip report twice!
It was GREAT to share with my wife as she'll be my co-pilot and navigator. (We are a killer team!)
GREAT write-up!
My wife said BMW should give customers like you a discount... Cause when prospective buyers read and view the videos it totally SEALS the deal! Lol

Saw 167 on the HUD then fuel cutoff. I hear speedo is off and you're only hitting 155. The other day I saw 124 and checked my phone with a GPS app and it said max speed was 118. Who knows?

Actually European cars are limited to 172 mph, not 155. I would love to reach the 190 mph, but worried the coding will remove warranty

Remember the speedo is purposely inaccurate... something like this:

Displayed = actual * 1.05 +3/-0

the reason for this is safety and so BMW is not considered culpable in speed related cases ("Officer my car said i was going XXX"). BMW can reasonably assert that at all times the car is going slower than displayed.

Use GPS/Waze/Trapster/etc for a real number.

My old automatic '09 CTS-V had a speed limiter of 175mph for that reason. The transmission output shaft was not rated for speeds any higher than that but the manual transmission cars were unlimited and could hit 191+mph. So there may be an engineering reason to limit the F10 M5 below 190mph.

I saw 163 & 170 this weekend. US. I got off right at 170 as it was pretty scary. I was expecting to hit a limiter but didnt.

The European cars are also limited to 155MPH or 250km/h.

In Germany and some other markets you can get it delimited to 308km/h or thereabouts.

As has been posted by others, a speedo indicated 167 or 172MPH doesn't mean you actually are going that fast...

As discussed in another thread here on the board, the margin of error is more significant at higher speeds. Also, from what I was able to find (looking at some posts from another board a while ago), the margin of error can be up to 10% +2.4mph.

So, 60mph could be indicated as high as 68.4mph. 155mph (Electronic Limit in the US) could be indicated as high as 172.9mph.

The fines are very significant to the manufacturer if the speedo is understating the actual speed, so I'm pretty sure that these errors are intentional.

BMW would limit the speed based on the speedo and not based on the actual speed. That would not make a lot of sense. I will get a GPS next time and see the actual speed achieved.

I am not sure what you are trying to say. However, the speed limiter is based on actual speed, not based on the indicated number on the speedo.
