M-school with M5

Just completed the 2-day M-school and drove the M5 through a number of different exercises including wet skid pad and full track in Spartanburg.

First, if any of the instructors read this board I just want to thank everyone involved with instruction because it is such a well-run program that I can't say enough about it. It is an absolutely fabulous experience and the school really showcases the different M cars including the M3 and 1M.

There is no doubt in my mind I will place an order come spring for a new M5. Funny enough I was between a panny gts and this car but after this program, I have solidified why I would want this car (though if I got a chance to track the gts that could change).

Acceleration is unreal. 3rd gear pulls like a nightmare. Braking from 115+ down to 40 to make a sharp 90 was extremely smooth and linear without any brake fade whatsoever, repeatedly. The M3 brakes were definitely inferior after repeated runs. I ran the car in sport plus settings but with mdm on. Floored acceleration from a stop does kick mdm on consistently. They had 5 M5s and 4 M3s running on their track at once and I felt that I was catching the m3s pretty quickly (though the other drivers were slower than me as I placed first in all events).

They gave us a memory stick that has telemetry and camera views of the runs that we took.

There was a big difference in feel between 1M and M5 but that is obvious. This car did not feel as big as I thought it would. The HUD is fantastic and is a must have in my opinion. There were no rattles or squeaks and I was pushing the aluminum trim everywhere to see if it was flimsy or shoddy.

Bottom line is that if you are not getting a coupe, this car is fantastic for its dual role.

Biggest decision now is figuring out between mc blue or champagne quartz.

I am very interested in how the M5 is on the track.
Any chance for the video?

As a repeat customer of BMW and recently purchased an F10 M5. BMW financial services just gave me a one day M school package with two night accommodations. This was on top of all the other cash incentives. Wasn't expecting it they just sent me a voucher. Anyone else ?

This is not the PDC delivery option.

Have to call them to pick a date now.

Yes it was that very thread that has made me consider the champagne quartz. Lots of mc blue, alpine white and gray.

Will post link when I get back so at the very least I can get more critique on my lines ha

You should try to extend your voucher to the 2 day program. Day 2 is when you get lots of lap time and start to really push the car with high speed cornering and have altitude changes. Make sure you join the cca to get the discount

I did the 1-day M School several weeks back and ordered my M5 as a result. I highly recomend going if you can. The track time clinched my decision about owning the M5. IMO, It is simply the best "all-rounder" car available (new or used) on the market today full stop!

That said, if I was going to track a car often (once a month or more) I would not choose the M5 and the M School experience taught me why. The M3 is simply better suited for track duty. Yes the M3 has less power and it might need some upgrades to better brake pads but any car you track often will need those. The M3 was much easier and predictable to drive hard. It goes whe you point it and at the limit it's easier to control. The M3 tells you where the limit is before you find it.. The M5 let's you find the limit and deal with the consequences.

In short, M5 is amazing! M3 is better track experience... And if I'm completely honest the little 1M had the most "fun factor". I won the 1M Rat Race! I came in a very close 2nd in the M3 slalom race. I was one of if not the fastest M5 on the full course (as evident by how often I was radioed into the pit passing lane to pass the cars I was catching). Btw.. I credit the reasons I was fast to listening to the instructors and lack of fear of damaging "their car" and not to better driving skill.

I did the 2 day in Feb with the E60 but have signed up for the advanced 1 day in Lime Rock. Lots of real F10 track time there. Is anyone else here doing that? They must still have open slots..
