Winter Wheels / Tires Set up for F10 M5

Anyone have any thoughts?

I was considering a square setup of Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4 in 255/40/19 on 19x9 ET35 wheels.

Perhaps something from AG?

I'm going to order OEM wheels that are currently available in Europe.

They are 19" light alloy style 408M with Pirelli W240 Sotto Zero. It's a 19x9 wheel, with ET32 (front) and ET25 (rear).

I know the wheels will cost more, but I want to stick with OEM wheels (just my personal preference)

So with that setup you will have to remove the tires from the wheels to rotate? It looks the the tires are square but the wheels are different offset front and rear?

I started looking about one month ago, sounds crazy ... for winter while we are baked in the summer heat.

Tirerack has not done much fitment at all since they don't have a car yet but they are supposed to get one around late Sep to mid October

The OEM will probably sell for $4000 US (they are low pressure cast wheels). In case it does go beyond the $4000 US, I have already done some research for aftermarket wheels + winter tires (Michelin PA4). Such as:
BBS - CH R - flow form cast wheels
Advan racing RS - flow form cast wheels
Avant Garde - F320 - forged wheels
Wedsport - SA55M
Enkei - RSM9

All 19's ... front 19 * 8.5 et low 30's; rear 19*9.5 et low to mid 30's

I usually run a square winter setup so I can rotate the wheels without dismounting them. Am I in the minority?

You are also planning to run a staggered winter set? What size tires?

As I've posted here previously, I'm a big fan of the Sotto Zeros for cold weather driving. I'm also waiting on Tire Rack to suggest a winter set up so that I can cross-shop.

tires remain at 255/40/19 as recommended by many. Staggered setup is optional.

Since the rear M5 is different, I need to be a bit creative and figure what what kind of wheels I am interested first and then see what kind of width and offset the manuf. makes and re-calc. the offset differences.

In the stock oem winter set case, 'Mgallen' info as provided is critical for the proper fitment as not to mix them up in error. Therefore, no front to back rotation.

I doubt I will drive my M5 in the winter. Winters here are pretty intense. Going to miss the X5M come winter.

Dunlops are my choice.. the Pirellis were not that good in my last M5. For my upcoming F10 I have the rubber (from the Porsche winters) just need some rims - its going to be a killer cost!

Pirelli is not that good at all, imo. Dunlop should have the WS 4D out this winter, supposed to be a slight improvement over the 3D.

I have the WS 3D and they are alright for the past two winters in T.O., given that virtually little snow had fallen.

You going for the stock or aftermarket rims ?

I've run the "4 square" setup for the last few winters and have been pleased with the results.

I'm researching whether I can use the winter setup for my E60 M5 on the new F10 M5. I use a set of OEM M6 wheels (F 8.5x19 ET12; R 9.5x19 ET17). I ran an analysis on a spread sheet to see how the different wheel widths and offsets from the stock F10 M5 wheels would impact internal and external clearance. Internal clearance improves by 23-28 mm and extarnal clearance drops by 11 - 16 mm. So the wheels sit farther away from the body of the car, with a change in the wheel centerline of 17 - 22 mm. I passed my spread sheet along to my CA and asked if he could check with a tech if there would be any issues or risk of damage to the suspension. He decided to call the US M-brand manager and ask his opinion. The M-brand manager didn't know the answer, so supposedly he sent my spead sheet to the M engineers in Europe to review and oppine. My CA has not heard back yet, but it's nice to know the M-brand team cares enough about their customers to provide this kind of customer service! I'll reply to this post when I get any information back from Munich.

Serious Question:

Why don't you just drive the OEM 20's with Pilot SS year round? The winters in our town are pretty mild and the days that aren't you don't want that car on the road anyway.

I plan on going with the OEM set up year round, if the weather sucks I will drive my Tahoe.

Couple reasons.

First off, the PSS are summer tires and not all-seasons. So even in minimal snow/slush/rain and temps below 40 they are not great. I got stuck on Barber blvd several years back in my 335i in a dusting!!

I have an SUV that I should use in theory if the weather is bad. I just like driving my Ms so much that I usually "risk" it.

I get bored with the same look. So I typically get a winter wheel/tire set that looks different, like say gunmetal or black. Just so I can look forward to the 20s again each spring.

I run my winters Thanksgiving-Easter. So I get twice the life on my OEM summers since they are only getting 5k mi/yr.

I love passing Subarus in my M with snow on the ground. I buy hi performance winters that perform amazingly well on cold dry pavement. I can drive the car hard year around.

I love buying tires.

etc etc.

But yes. If I was disciplined I could park the M on its summer tires whenever the weather was questionable. But what fun would that be!!??

+1

M car is for driving. Not for garage display. At least if the snow is not deep enough which the M has to stay home that day or two.

Makes sense. I may look into that. I have a 911 that sits all winter hooked to a battery charger. It's going bye bye.

A good friend of mine parks his 997 4S all winter!! But then again he only has PS2s.

I think the common theme here is that if you want to drive your hi performance car year round (and you should!!) just get it the proper shoes and have at it!

I think it is silly to park a depreciating asset half the year when you bought it to drive.

True dat! The M5 was designed to be driven all four seasons. Put some winter tires on and enjoy your machine year round.

All winter is 3 months. The real reason its leaving is my 17 mo old. Not feeling his safety in the tiny back seat. Wife kid and I are together a lot and I want to be able to drive a nice car.

Also, I can use the M5 for business, it's more appropriate in appearance and can take 4 people.

911 doesn't allow either. For sale.

That's the beauty of the M sedan. Sport car fast with room for 5 and a trunk for golf clubs. Get it some winter shoes and you and your wife (and baby) will enjoy it year round. Save the tahoe for trips to Mt hood or Home depot. That's what I use my Sequoia for.

While some think that parking a car all winter is not smart - you will be surprised how much longer you keep your cars when you have variation. Also by spreading wear and tear across multiple vehicles your depreciation hit is less. Now don't get me wrong having multiple cars is always worse on the pocket but I am most likely going to try it - order an all around vehicle this winter and then picking up something fun in the spring.

The question is - does an M5 make sense when I still want a sports car!
