Interesting things my SA told me about the M5 production and LCI

I recently placed an order for a 2013 M5. My SA called me today to confirm the options with me. I was a bit bothered by the LCI coming next year so I asked him about it, and he told me two interesting things that I would like to share with you guys and see what you guys think.

1. 2013 M5 is going to be a short production car. They don't have allocation for the next 6 months.

2. According to the guy who works at the dealer who deals with M cars. 2014 M5 will not get the LCI changes the 5 series will get.

Any of this may be true?

I don't know if any of this is true though. It would be GREAT news to me if it is, so I don't have to pull my hair out about the LCI coming for the 5 series.

When you say SA you are saying Service Advisor? I find it odd that he/she would know more than lets say a sales manager or GM?

Honestly don't sweat the LCI changes unless you can wait a few months to see how this all plays out - my estimate is March at the Geneva show. The F10 is going to get a lot of updates especially when you think about the potential of a new TFT display (no more dials); ///M may want to hold out on some of them hence his position on the M5. However I can't see BMW rolling out a bunch of changes for F10 without affecting the M5 in some way.

My guess has been that the LCI wont impact the M5 immediately, especially since what weve read states minor changes to the m5.

As for allocations, not sure. I just got a production number and submitted dates for a March ED.

Sounds like sales rhetoric to me. "Don't worry...buy now!"

Regardless, I hope he's right

Guys, there is no such a thing as short production on this car... I live in Europe and spoke to the relevant people in Germany.. no such a thing, they are selling this suckers like crazy... and they will keep selling them!

Now this LCI stuff, I don't know... but whatever it is I don't really care... it won't hit the M5 anytime soon.

Short production YEAR, meaning MY14 SOP begins in July.

In my experience there are very few SAs that even know how to spell "BMW." It sounds like yours is one of them.

First, the U. S. spec 2013 M5 started with July 2012 production and the LCI will start with July 2013 production -- seems like a full year to me if they start referring to the LCI changes as the 2014 model year.

Second, I was told by someone in BMW NA that knows, the LCI will include the M5 but the exterior light changes will be "bolt-on" changes if you want to make them.

Third, "allocation" has nothing to do with production. Allocation refers to the process of BMW NA deciding how many high demand, limited availability models each particular dealer will be authorized to sell. BMW NA doesn't commit cars to dealers that far in advance, sometimes only a month or two in advance at the beginning of a model run. What he may be saying to you is BMW NA hasn't allocated any more M5s to his dealership.

When deciding how they will 'allocate' cars, BMW NA takes many things into consideration including prior sales, CSI scores (which is why some dealers plead for "all 5s"), etc. For M cars it usually includes prior sales volume of M cars.

I think your SA is ignorant, or more likely, doesn't want you to have a reason to put off your purchase.

Did check for you guys again today, the changes affecting the M5 include the new LED Headlights and the Angel eyes not being anymore round but a bit square... In all honesty, I am very happy with the lights I have today... no need for LED, the ones I have now follow the road. Plus they are already comments about those LED being too bright...

Then turn signals will go to the side mirrors... not sure if I want that either.

As for the rear only different light pattern on the stops and front a new bumper that will make the car look more like the 6 series.

Conclusion, I pass on the LCI

This is confirmed? I only ask because that would mean they will remove the turn signals from the M5 gill.

I believe so, look at the 6 Series Gran Coupe, the things they are changing will be like the ones on that car.

Agree with all of your comments, except that I'm certain I prefer the turn signals in the gills versus the mirror. I think I'll be happier with the pre-LCI setup.

Thanks for the invitation, but I'll have to take you up on it for the next car. I already did ED on September 1st.

Great build! I really love the MCB/ Silverstone combination.

When i bought my car, my SA, who I've used for years and has always been up front with me told me the only changes the M5 is going to have are:
New nav software(already on all 2013's)
The ability to download updated software OTA (already on 2013's)
New idrive controller that you can use your finger to write with, similar to Audis system.
Front bumper will recieve a small modification, seemed like just a small bar goign across the middle opening on the 5sport bumper, not sure if M5 is getting it
Angel eyes will now be more sqaure than round.
Turn signals will move to the "eyelid" as well as on the side view mirrors.

Considering all this I decided I would get the car now. Spoke with a tech and he told me from what he has seen, 2013's that have the new nav software should be able to upgrade to the touch idrive controller by replacing the controller. I tried Audis before, and i didnt care for it much.
Also, if you have the option where your car warns you when someone is in your blind spot, the turn signal side mirrors are a simple swap as well.

Are you talking about the M5 or the 5 series? If BMW is going to change the M5, most of us are expecting the headlights and maybe tailights, but the side mirrors and especially front bumper? So the M5 is getting all of the 5 series changes? Seems a bit unlikely. If the M5 is getting all these changes, that's a lot of changes!
