Real word gas mileage?

I just drove my neighbors F10 M5 (he is still sub 1200 miles, so not past the break in) and was very surprised to see that after 500 miles of mostly tame city driving he was getting 12.3 mpg.

What other "real word" mpg numbers are folks getting, and does it improve after the break-in service? The car is rated for 17/22 and some folks have reported 28 on the freeway. But 12.3mpg of non-spirited driving seems really low.

Trying to do my ED in April...

The "Real Word" is that the F10 M5 gets good gas mileage. LOL!

It always takes me back when I see posts about gas mileage on a as nearly as makes no difference 100k car... Just saying... Having said that I can get nearly 700km on a tank straight highway if I keep it at 105km/h (stupid sheriffs)

I'm at 5700 miles and usually do around 12 in town, and 24 on the highway.

I bet if I tried to drive efficiently in town the city number would go up quite a bit, but I will never know. And I don't really care.

Better than my M3. lol. I don't really think of gas mileage on a high dollar car but I hate refueling frequently. The new M5 is very reasonable. I get about 250 miles out of a tank or so. I haven't really paid attention.

It's not a $ thing, was more curious than anything else. Maybe I am going "green" in my old age. I currently drive an E46 M3 (manual) and get 18/28 if I try, 14 or so when I don't...

I'm averaging 11-12mpg city and 22 highway. But I've only had 370 miles on it so far.

This thread really falls into the category of who gives a fuck.

I didn't buy an M5 for the gas mileage. It's a government certified has guzzler!

Waste of an M3 if that's what you are doing.

I used to get 13 mpg out of my e46 m3 cabrio back when I had one.

Obviously from the majority of responses most owners of a 100k car do give a fuck about gas mileage. It may not be a priority though, but still important. Why not at least try to have your cake and eat it too? Having a 100k car should not mean we are not going to care about things like the environment and dependence on foreign oil, or frequent stops at the gas station. There are factors beyond the cost of the gas. Besides, I believe BMW had it posted at 15/22, now has a "TBD" wording on their website, so do not be surprised is under EPA revision, which is what happened with the F10 550 that send it deep into guzzler territory. Also, I like the large tank on the M5 and coupled with good MPG gives me a longer range so I do not have to stop that often for gas. Once all of us go beyond the break-in period at about 5k, lets do this exercise again, MPG should get better.

I do wish it had better MPG, but I understand that kind of power comes with a tradeoff. I am getting one despite the MPG. But it gets to me that everytime when this question is asked there is someone who will come with the same "if you can buy a $100K dollar car MPG shouldn't be an issue" crap. Many of us do care. M5 hybrid anyone?

Of course everyone will have an opinion as to if and how important this issue is.

For me I will never ever ever understand why anyone could care about fuel consumption on a 412kw car.

If you value that so much buy a 4cylinder diesel or a Prius.

Each to their own.

but surely there is a difference between caring and being interested.
I agree if you own a 560hp car fuel shouldn’t be your deciding factor but I for one can afford an M5 and have ordered one but that doesn’t mean I can afford to fill the tank up 4 times a week every week. In the UK that would mean £1600 a month just on fuel alone! BTW I know that is a bit of an extreme example.
I am sure you could all afford a lambo's and Ferraris if you wanted them but I bet you say to yourself (I couldn’t because of the running costs).
There are people out there that stretch themselves to own their dream car (maybe it’s an M5) and we shouldn’t forget that.
