Bought a Z06 - Pics and General Thoughts

I recently picked up a black C7 Z06. I've had a 2013 M5 since new and, although the M5 is a great sports sedan, I wanted a sports car again. I'm a big fan of vinyl wraps and so promptly wrapped the Vette. Below are some pics. It's a color shift wrap. I added yellow accents on the ground effects to go with the yellow calipers and yellow wheel pinstripes that were already on the car. I left a number of accents black, grey or carbon fiber, including the mirrors, top of the roof, ground effects, and hood insert.

Feel free to express whether you love it or hate it.

I've included below brief comments on the car and differences between it and the M5. Most of them probably won't be surprising, even if you've never owned a Vette. I figured people might be interested in hearing my thoughts on the Vette even though this is an M5 forum; after all, you're performance car enthusiasts at heart.

- Performance: Compared to the M5, the Z06 has more power, less weight, a lower center of gravity, stronger brakes, and stickier tires (I have the Z07 option, which includes carbon ceramics and barely DOT legal Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires). As a result, it accelerates, corners and brakes noticeably better than the M5. Full disclosure, I haven't tracked either car.

- Interior Quality: M5 is noticeably better. However, it's a little tough to compare because some of the apparent difference in quality may simply be attributable to the Vette having less insulation and a greater emphasis on weight savings. Regardless, it has more rattles. This is especially the case in the roof areas and I primarily attribute it to the removable T-Top; I don't care about removing the top and frankly wish the car came with a fixed top to add stiffness and eliminate the rattles. Also, the car generates a boatload of heat, and the interior gets really hot. Overall, in my opinion, the Vette's fit and finish and noises and rattles aren't appropriate for a car of it's price.

- Features (brief): The Vette has keyless locking and unlocking. You just walk away. Why the heck doesn't my M5 have that? Both have heads-up displays. The B&O stereo in the M5 is far superior to the Vette's stereo. The Z06 has the competition seats, which I find perfectly comfortable, though I'm a relatively small guy. The Vette's seats are better for sporty driving, the M5's for cruising and long distances.

- Exhaust: The Vette has an adjustable system and when it opens, it's ferocious sounding. When closed it's really quiet. Almost too quiet. But still, it's nice having the best of both worlds. And you can open it all the time with the flick of a switch.

- Attention: The Vette gets a surprising amount of attention, and it seems to be mostly positive. And it's not just because of the wrap. Before I wrapped the car I would get compliments and stares, which surprised me since it's already several years old. I'm not sure why. I assume it's because it's a sports car and those just plain attract more attention. Also, the Z06 with the Z07 package looks far more aggressive and attractive than a regular Vette.

Looks very nice -especially with the wrap! Also - M5 4 door down to 2 door vette so slightly different class but if you no longer need the back seats, I think it's a good move. Other option was AMG - all wheel but still sedan based.

Ive always been a fan of the chameleon wraps. Great car! I agree on the exhaust, the LS motors sound awesome when opened up.

Was your M5 tuned and/or modified in any way?

The yellow accents seem to be a love-it-or-hate-it touch. My M5 is stock. Full body wraps are generally $2.5-4K, depending on the material, shop, geographic area, and type of vinyl. But they can go up to $6-10K for custom designs and chrome or satin chrome.

Had a 2015 Z06 vert before my M5. Loved it. Can't go back to a 2 seater so when my M5 sells its back to a GTR. But I'd rather have the Z again.

Looks great. I too have been thinking about getting a Z06. I had the previous gen Z06 and I miss that car.

Got the new GTR while waiting for the AWD M5 or even the M8(?) and not disappointed-- I know it's not a corvette ( tho I was asked if it was the "new" corvette) but it's got a back seat, a big trunk, AWD (drove all winter) and it's a blast to drive. The famous zero to 60 in ~3 sec is real-- can't knock the GTR and I'm a bimmer man...

OP, beautiful car, big fan of the C7 Z06s! What year is this and did you give any thought to the black rose metallic? Seems very similar to the wrap. Anyway, hope it serves you well and the feeling of running hot is just only a feeling.

Rambler, yes, I do believe it looks similar to black rose metallic, though I've never seen that color in person. It's a 2016. Since I bought it used, I couldn't be too picky about color. And having certain options was more important to me than the color. Plus, since I planned to wrap it no matter what, color wasn't a big deal.
