I was looking under there couple of months ago and thinking how ghetto that bare metal looked in the trunk and then I saw the outlet. I haven't used it and don't think I will ever need to.

It is perfect for the sir compressor as has been pointed out.

I use it for inflating the pool toys regularly.

Apart from that, useless.

I have seen it used at the track with the M mobility kit compressor. That must be the design intention.

It's to the right of the latch where the trunk meets the car. It's close to the strap that pulls the air pump compartment cover. Get it?

You should get it leather wrapped or frozen painted!

Yup the E60 M5 had one there too. It is in fact there for use of the ///M mobility kit.

Also in case most people didn't know this either, but there is another power outlet in the footwell of the passenger side front seat. It's there on the E60 and the F10.
