DCT Transmission Oil Pump Upgrade

As many of you know the BMW DCT Oil Pump has been having failures. The dealers offer no upgrade but to purchase a new OEM unit. We as SSP have fixed the problem, so that you don't have buy a new 900.00 oil pump.

The failure is not the pump itself, but the bearings within the pump assembly. The DCT oil pump can operate at pressures above 18+ bar. The factory pump uses inferior needled bearings that fail. In time, these bearings wear out and cause catastrophic failure of the oil pump assembly.

We have developed a heavy duty bronze bearing that fixes this problem. Our solid bronze bearing has zero deflection and can withstand the high pressures the pump operates at.

Description:
4 Heavy Duty Bronze Bearings
Knurled Edges
CNC'd To Exact OEM Fitment

A fixture and tool kit are available for the installation of these bearings.

Are you able to speculate why Getrag would use needle bearings if a bronze bushing is a better solution? Wouldn't needle bearings be more expensive than bronze bushings for initial manufacture? Or, is the problem mainly with the quality of the needle bearings, not the concept? Thank you.

Every other DCT we currently work on uses a solid bushing for the oil pump assembly. Solid bushings have zero chance of deflection under pressure, while needle bearings will eventually wear out. The entire pump assembly operates under high pressure and this type of bearing will never hold up for the long haul.

I am not really sure why Getrag would allow this type of bearing to be used. When you make thousands of pumps, I don't think cost is a factor for any type of bearing choice. The BMW DCT is the only dual clutch transmission on the market that has a part number replacement for the oil pump assembly. I believe that this offered, because they have seen the problem in warranty repairs over the past 6+ years.

What is the typical shop hrs to replace the bearings (if done prior to destruction of the pump)?

It takes roughly 1 hour to change out the bearings in the pump assembly. It takes roughly 3 hours of labor to get to the pump assembly. The transmission first has to be removed from the vehicle, and then the clutch will need to be removed to access the pump. You will have to figure time to reinstall the transmission as well.

Ideally this would be the time to examine the clutch. The clutch could also be replaced at this time.

Any idea on the full package with all parts replaced with reinforced ones. I would only want to open up the transmission once.

You will normally hear a high pitch whining noise coming from the mid part of the transmission.
