"Oh honey, wait a moment while we are on this nice walk while I take some pictures"
"yeah right, see you at home"
F16 was kind of high, you could have gotten away with 4/5.6 and boost the speed.

i usually try to shoot about an F9 area, allow for some detail on the moon, but not so much that i need to go super slow on shutter speed.

My original shots were at f5.6 (wide open on that lens) and all I got was a big white disk. Probably should have tried somewhere in the 9-11 range.

You could get a better shot Mark...I shot a similar shot (actually a couple a few days before the supermoon and then a couple on that night)..i used the following:

ISO 100, 300mm, f/5.6, 1/60

I will upload in and post it in a couple min....

With just a monopod? I don't think I could hold still enough to shoot at 1/60. Hell the pic above is 1/200 and it's far from sharp. It was also taken with my nifty-two-fifty.

this is the original (obviously cropped) 400mm 1/1000th F8 at ISO500

and the second shot is the same mood with the exposure adjusted.

I should have shot at about 1/1250 or 1/1600th of a second to get more darks to show the detail, but hindsight right!!!

I sacrificed ISO for handholdability, and for fast shutter speed because i knew i was shooting so far into the distance.

My favorite moons to shoot are partial because you can see the shadows of the craters making them look more detailed.

I probably could have also gone to a 400ISO

I think Dave's moon pic would beat all those... him and his 500 mm prime that weighs more than the moon itself.

shooting the moon at half like adrian did, makes a huge difference to the amount of detail visible on the moon, i love partial moon shots.... so beautfull

full moon, kinda flat.

Nah not monopod/tripod...just my ghetto maneuvering with cinderblocks and whatever else was available...I think I was on top of a mortar bunker/shelter....so to answer your question...no not handheld.

Having this camera has shown me that I'm not as steady on my feet as I used to be, not that I was ever the epitome of balance and poise. But I have the hardest time holding the camera steady, especially when I'm partially bent over using a monopod. I should probably invest in a lightweight CF tripod.

Here is the other half.
Mark, maybe you just need a CF tripod instead. With just enough capacity to hold your junk. Do you have a release too?

I just say, go to 200ISO and then you'll be able to shoot the same shot at 1/400th of a second Mark. and if you back off 1 stop, you can even go 1 stop further on your shutter speed and get an even cleaner shot
