How much earl are you burning?

Oil change at 1400. Now 3000 and down 1.25L with warning. Filled back to max level but not over. Dealer says S63tu can burn 1qt every 750-1000 miles for first 6k miles. True dat?

I hear a lot of people are having this problem. I have a 2015 M5 Comp. Pkg. with 18,000 miles and never had to top off the oil.

Have you checked your intake pipes for oil, particularly the passenger side?

I did the recommended run-in procedure: alternating revs, engine braking and hard acceleration and mine uses 1l every 2500m. I discussed this with the dealer and 1l of oil every 800 miles is not deemed by BMW as being unusual.

I have not. How do you do that and what does one do if there is oil in the intake? This thing runs like a scalded ape. I've not noticed any change in performance.

I'm just over 4,000 miles past the break-in service on my 2016 Comp Pack M5 and I have not had to top up the oil so far.

Like DingolfingLove I follow a regimented break-in procedure I read about from an engine builder that is designed to achieve a tight seal on the rings.

Just FYI. If you only get one low oil warning between oil changes you're probably fine. There isn't a dipstick in the car so when they change the oil they rely on the digital oil level sensor, which apparently isn't 100% accurate. The new filter also hasn't absorbed oil yet so you might go a quart low after things have all settled down.

I had to top off twice, car has 8k on it. My SA told me it's completely normal as the car is getting broken in.

Not a drop of top off oil on this M5 (just passed 17k mi), the previous M6GC, or any other S63/N63/N63Tü vehicles with the exception of a 2011 550i, which was a turbo seal failure.

US cars and RoW cars will have different measurements to accommodate false triggers resulting from fuel dilution rather than actual consumption.

I add a quart of earl about every 2,500 miles. SA gives it to me for free and it's never really been an issue.

Dat ish be true, yo.

I have 2014 just reached 20k miles. Not a single drop of oil added.
I think excessive oil burning happens pre 2014 cars.

On the S63TU, the electronic measurements are far more accurate than a dipstick could possibly be. I was apprehensive about BMW following Porsche in eliminating it, but knowing now how, when, where, and why oil is flowing through the system makes complete sense. When the oil is cold and thick, if there is a 2.5bar or more pressure differential between the intake and exit ports of the oil filter, the filter is bypassed to provide adequate lubrication. Also with oil temps below 100'C, the oil cooler is bypassed as well. So there can be significant amounts sitting in situ, until the DME's determine its needed. Hence why the capacity was increased by 1L on paper to account for these temporary fluctuations. After a fresh change, the system will flow completely momentarily, fill the cooler, but will bypass the filter rather quickly which can trigger the QLT to issue faults/CCM's (overfill at first, then low level once all the passages are filled).
