I was able to do this without a universal joint, sort of. Passenger side was fine, just took a bit of maneuvering around the hoses to undo the screw however, for the drivers side it was impossible without the joint, so I took off all the screws except for the most inaccessible one, in the back left of the airbox. I was able to pry it open just wide enough to disengage the filter and tease it out.

It's easier to remove the whole airbox, there's only 1 bolt holding it in, the whole thing just pops out.
Then you can remove the lids on your bench and don't have to worry about loosing a bolt.

Where is the bolt?
It's on the right side of the drivers side box or left side of passenger box. It's the large pan head with torx fitting.

I've heard of at least one case in which the air filter got sucked out of its position. Is the purpose of the charcoal filters to prevent this...?

I pull the whole boxes out. If it takes me more than 5 minutes for both sides I'd be amazed.
