2018 M Badge
Will this be the new trend to apply psudo M branding to non-real M cars? This is the first I've seen with the brakes, and the side M? The new 5 looks very porky, and the same NAV as the M4 .....looks like Big King

Guy shows up at my shop today with his "M5 " calipers !! On his E39 530i
After quick inspection of his ( big brakes ) it turned out to be a blue stick ON aluminum brake cover ..... I presume ( $10 ebay china upgrade ) ? From far away it looked legit, but ..... WTF ! Really ! The owner checked my car and asked if my were real M5 calipers ???? I could not believe it, the guy could not see the real thing in front of him ? I left it without any comments. This crap should be outlawed ! ( we should have the power to rip of any of the imposter badging ! |

Yes the new 2018 M550i will come with many M badges. It's part of the sub ///M brand they invented a while back with cars including the M235i, the X4M40i, and the M550d to name a few. It's supposed to be like Audi's S4, S6, S7, S8, etc.. brand, but BMW only does the M thing on a few select models, where Audi does it on most of their models. If you ask me, Audi does it right and the problem with BMW is that they invented their sub brand after ///M Division was founded making it stupid. Audi had the S brand before the RS brand came out, so the RS became a more elite brand with fewer numbers. With BMW it seems to be the other way around. There are more real M cars than the M sub-brand cars, and sometimes it doesn't even make sense. The 2 best example I can think of are the M550d and the M240i. The M550d produces more torque than the F10 M5, has AWD and can achieve a faster 0-60 than the F10 M5. The M240i has more torque than the M2 and is supposedly faster in a straightline. BMW needs to get their shit straight. With that said, the next generation M cars might be headed in the right direction, with the 2018 M550i being AWD and achieved a 0-60 of 4.0s, the next M5 should also be AWD and will achieve a faster time.

Looks like I need to get on eBay right away to make sure my "real" M5 has more badges than the impersonators :P

Yup badging is getting out of hand. I've some time this weekend at last to remove my X5 M50D that takes up almost half the cars width as well as the small side flank Ms.

I think BMW are reacting to the market and looking to tap into that lucrative sub M brand that's so popular.

The side M badges have been used as standard on M Sport cars outside the USA for around 8 years.
They are factory fitted to every BMW model including the 1 series. Its a no cost option to have them deleted. Most of the world are used to these badges, but it seem many US guys freak out every time they see them.

The side M badges are fitted to all cars with M Sport pack, even 116i. Not just the M Performance models like M240i. The M Performance models get the rear M badge aswell. Both the M240i and M2 have the same torque of 500Nm but on the M2 it comes in at a lower RPM and stays there till a higher RPM (1400-5560 RPM against 1520-4500 RPM) 0-100km/h (0-62mph) for the M240i Auto is 4.6s and 4.4s for the M240i x Drive. The M2 DTC is 4.3s.

Over supply, and over marketing will drive more sales but resale with continue to plummet. We buys cars to have fun which is great, but I appreciated when I sold my 2 years old GT3 I sold it for what I paid for it. My M4 may actually be my last M car sad to say, but BMW's brand is all over the place with crazy pricing.

Maybe M division should come out with something more appealing then to differentiate themselves more ! Maybe call it M-Race as not to be confused with the lesser M-sport. Then we all could be driving an M5-R or M6-R

I agree with a lot of what is being expressed in this thread, but at the end of the day enthusiasts like us on these forums are the minority. BMW is running a business and they are going to do their best to appeal to the broader market. Unfortunately the broader market couldn't distinguish an M5 from 550 M Sport.

I too find the BMW branding to be needlessly convoluted, but it doesn't really detract from my experience. |
