Starting in 2nd

Hey guys,

New to the m5 world.

I've notice that my car normally starts in 2nd gear when I come to a stop.

Occasionally it'll start of in 1st gear.

Is this normal?

Will this wear the clutch?

That happens to me as well so I am guessing it is normal, I normally drive on D2 which is when the car does that; it feels like the car is slipping the clutch for years getting off in second. When I drive manual in S3 the car goes to 1st every time I stop. I haven't driven in D3 but maybe the more aggressive setting it would start in 1st gear.

I have noticed when the car is in Eco and all other settings are in comfort the car starts in 2nd gear from stop, however after a bit of spirited driving especially in manual mode and downshifting needlessly when all settings are returned to Eco and comfort the car will start in 1st gear from stop. After a day or so of driving in comfort the car will return to starting in 2nd gear from stop. I reckon the car will adapt to your driving style but I could be horribly wrong

Mine never starts in 2 unless it's a rolling stop. Any mode. Try a transmission reset.

I believe the car analyses how you have been driving right before you come to a stop.

If you pootle around and come to a stop it will start off in 2nd. If you have been giving it some it will start in 1st at the next stop. Both in D1 and D2 for sure.

One thing I noticed is at a stop in 2nd if you want it to start in 1st, whilst the left part of your right foot is on the brake give the throttle a little but assured prod, then the car goes straight into 1st and therefore when you finally drive off its in 1st.
