F10 M5 HUD (head up display)?
Originally I thought I was getting a bare-bones M5, being that it comes pretty well loaded. But now that I've done some reading on HUD, Im very intrigued.
For those that have had it before - would u say it's a very helpful option? Remember, I have never had it before so I dont really know what Im missing out on if I dont get it. 1.) What does it tell you - tach, speed, when to shift? what else? I think I saw a pic of it with the GPS - that would actually be pretty good as I find myself looking at the NAV and not the road many times. If it adds to safety then definitely a feature I want. 2.) Does it require a special windshield? Will it cost me an arm and a leg if I get a crack in the windshield? 3.) How well illuminated is it during sunny days? 4.) Does anyone have pictures of it yet from their M5? (I dont know if you can even take pictures of it since it essentially a hologram) TIA |

It tells you speed, tach, GPS directions, music information, and more. It's excellent and I highly recommend it.
It's definitely bright enough to see on sunny days. First two pics below are from the F30 HUD on a sunny day. Go to 16 seconds in of this video, it shows you HUD at work on an F30 3 series:

That looks good, might have to get it.
+1 on the polarized question. Do you know if you can still see it with them on? |

Not to mention the "wow" factor when people get in your car and see it. |

HUD doesn't work well with polarized glasses. Either it can't be seen or it's very dim if visible.

Here's a video that shows what HUD looks like on the F10 M5, as well as the side view cameras.

The M5 HUD shows tach, gear and speed in M view, and the same info as a regular 5 series in the non-M mode - speed, speedlimit info, nav and check control messages. It does not show you the track info like the new F30 does.

I bet adding that function will be one of the "material changes" to the M5's electronics for MY2013, or maybe just a software upgrade that can be applied to existing models. But honestly for a second when I read that I thought you meant info that'd be relevant at the track, like a g-force meter or torque distribution chart.

If you can't see it with polarized sunglasses what's the point? All of my sunglasses are polarized.

I love my Maui Jim sunglasses for driving, but they reduce the HUD visibility to about 10% of the normal brightness.

Solution--one pair of non-polarized glasses that stay in the car. Unless you are driving over water, I fail to see the need for polarized sunglasses in the car anyway.
Having gone from a HUD BMW to a non HUD Cadillac, I can tell you that I really miss the HUD and would not dream of ordering a car without one if it were available. |
