BMS Stage 1 > JB4 Upgrade
I finally got around to installing my JB4 upgrade kit and wanted to share my install experience and hope it helps the others out. Took me 2 hours to do. I was slow and first time pulling his stuff apart.
Order upgrade kit from here: (You do need the Stage 1 in order to upgrade) http://www.burgertuning.com/N63_JB4_upgrades.html BMS Instructions for install http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31292 When you order your BMS JB4 Upgrade kit from BMS, you will receive the following: JB4 Circuit Board (No Case) OBD II Cable 1 x Brown & 1 x Green Wires Two Twist-On Wire Connectors What I used to complete my install: - Body Clip Removal Tool (Remove plastic panels on the L/R of engine) - 3/8 Heat Shrink for the OBD terminations - 1/4 Heat Shrink to heat shrink the Brown/Green cables together - 12" screw driver - Zip Ties or Velco - Heat Gun or Torch for heatshrink - Pull string (if you'd like) - bullet splice (I am not a fan of twist on wire connectors) - Torx screw set. - Download firmware from http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31292 Exterior 1) Disconnect your battery 2) Remove L/R covers (see picture) 3) Disconnect your Stage 1 Box & Swap the internal circuit board with JB4 4) Take apart the black AMP connector (beware, nuts are small and will fall) 5) Squeeze the rubber ring holding the wires on the sides and one by one pull the brown and green wires through OBDII end first. Do not try to push the PINs through as they will bend. 6) Once pulled through, push Green CAN PIN into PIN 2 on the AMP connector and Brown CAN PIN into PIN 15. 7) Take the Green/Brown wires and pull them through the 1/4 heat shrink and shrink it using the heat gun. I used a wire hanger to run through the heat shrink and then use to pull the wires through with the OBD end first. 8) Terminate the bullet splices on the end of green/brown wires where it will connect to OBDII 9) Run the two wires underneath the plastic shielding below the center window. I used pull string first and pull it through but you can pull the edge of the cover back where it touches the bay and push it through. If you want, you can just remove it as well but I didn't want to hassle with it. Interior - I did not get pictures 1) Underneath the dash, there are 4 screws (Torx). The two small screws futher away need to be undone first. The remove the two larger cloest to you which is for the airbag. Everything snaps off and the airbag once unsnapped at the bottom will be pulled away to unlatch from the bottom panel. I didn't disconnect, left it all hanging. 2) Take your 12" screw driver, and next to the large bundle of wires coming in, about 6" to the right, I pushed it through the fabric and then attached a pull string to it and fed it to the engine bay and pulled it through and out. I did this because its way to tight to try to feed the cable from underneath the car into the bay. 3) Attach the OBD cable to the pull string inside the cabin. I tied the pull string around the cable and then taped it. pulled the string from the engine bay all the way until leaving on enough on the interior side to connect to the OBD II. 4) Take the OBD II connector and push it trough the large square entry where the foam attaches (you'll see what I am talking about when you drop the tray) and connect the OBD connector. 5) Mount the airbag to the tray, it has to be slid on from the top onto the top of the tray and then push everything back in place and screw back in. 6) Terminate bullet splices to the end of the OBD cables. 7) Slide 3/8 heat shrink over the cable 8) Terminate the Green/Brown cables to the OBD (Green on Green / Brown on Brown) 9) Test that you have a complete connection to the JB4 and Wheel controls work (see wheel control instruction video to test) 10) Slide heat shrink over terminations and shrink it down using heat gun. 11) Dress everything in using zip ties. 12) Install Right plastic cover. 13) Reinstall your AMP connector cover for the cable (If you have the aluminum cover, no need to install cover. 14) Dress in all the cables 15) Mount your JB4 box how you would like it (I upgraded to aluminum and was able to install mine between engine bay and the square box against the body panel. I believe its the cabin filter but could be wrong. See my pictures. 16) Upgrade firmware on the JB4. Download from http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31292 17) Install Left Cover. NOTE: If you ordered your aluminum cover to replace the plastic, you do not need to install the AMP connector covers. Use the screws that came with your JB4 kit. s63tu JB4 MAP GUIDE: Map 0: JB4 disabled Map 1: 19psi peak Map 2: 22psi peak Map 3: 18psi peak Map 4: Stock map w/ CANbus enabled Map 5: Not used Map 6: Custom target map Map 7: 25psi peak (e.g. race gas) Map 8: Progressive meth map. Nice write-up!!
I just ordered the JB4 upgrade for my stage 1 So, the maps only work correctly if you got the BCM? |

Damn, this is WAY more involved than the Stage 1. They still don't have the BCM's available yet but will soon. I'll come back here for sure when it's time to install. Thanks in advance.

The hardest part for me was being in the tight space to route the OBD connector through the firewall. I am 6'4 and 280lbs so it wasn't pleasant. Once routed, its super easy. I hear the BCM will be the tough one.

It's my understanding that it doesn't produce much more power than Stage 1 at the moment until BCM is out. The maps work but don't hit the target boost.

Nah, this is a game changer for those who don't want to do a Flash Tune by opening up the ECU physically. I too am waiting for the BCM. Even with the Stage 1, with exhaust and catless downpipes, people make good power, but with the new JB4 + BCM and stock exhaust with stock downpipes, people will be making more power than the setup I just mentioned. With JB4, BCM, catless downpipes, exhaust and maybe an MSR intake, crazy power levels will be achieved, even better to do meth and run high octane too, all without Flash Tuning. It will be very interesting to see a JB4 + BCM M5 go up against a flash tuned M5 in the future.

I have a feeling a stock next generation M5 with hybrid assist AWD will outperform the setup you just described above in the 0-60 and the 1/4 mile. Well maybe the 1/4 mile. Lol!
