Usually religious about backparking but totally screwed up today...
I front-parked totally relying on my PDC/camera thinking I was in the clear and scraped the whole underside of my front bumper really bad on the curb. So peeved at myself right now
Has anyone else done this? I'm so considering replacing the whole front bumper - the car was flawless before. sigh

I know what u mean! Even at stock ride height the F10 M5 is in danger on hitting curbs that are higher than others. I plan on lowering mine as soon as the Eibach Springs come out , but one way that I alleviated this problem is I bought some Tracwrap and cover the entire underside of the front bumper with it. My front bumper is clear-bra'd but the template does not cover the very bottom of it. The Tracwrap works great, cause its also clear but it's 3 times thicker than clear-bra. Plus it's easy to just replace if it gets scratched.
I've already had one occurrence when I was pulling out of a steep driveway out of a gas station front ways, and I scraped the bottom of my front bumper but the Tracwrap totally saved it! I will say that it did take me a little while to cover the entire bottom of the front bumper as I had to take time and cut small pieces to get uniform coverage. It was a fun little project though, and no one can really tell that it's there because it's on the bottom and its clear. If I were you if wait til your bumper gets a little more beat up then respray it, put a clear-bra on and put Tracwrap in the bottom, and most importantly park far away from curbs and those damned cement parking spot bumpers!

Are you sure it wasn't the black piece ("engine encapsulation") under the car? A car wash screwed mine up, cost me roughly ~$300 with labor a couple weeks back.

it's a separate piece from the bumper so you just need to get the plastic replaced. It was about $200 on my 550i and probably about the same on the M5.

I hate carwashes. I always wash my cars at home. Hate to see the beast scratched up. I always get on my wife about getting too close, but when possible, I park way away from everyone no matter what kind of car it is.

Tell me about it, it completely ripped apart. Then a few days later, went to a friend's house, he banged his door on mine. Hoping PDR fixes it up, otherwise I'll go insane. All within a month!

+1. I also park so far away that I need a shuttle bus to get me back to/from the shopping plaza/mall.

I hope you learned your lesson. I would never put a car through a car wash unless I didn't care about damage.

Perhaps, but your M5 went through a car wash at the VDC.

Basically imagine jamming the front of the car up onto a higher than standard-height cement curb and then going in reverse such that the lip sustains double-damage.

Ouch that sucks.. On something like the bumper though, you *may* be able to get it fixed up without repainting the entire bumper if it's not too bad?
I have a few rock chips, costing me $130 to fix it up. Could be worse. |

This *just* happened to me yesterday, there is an intercooler down there right above that black piece for heavens sake!! I almost strangled myself for popping up on the parking stone by pulling up too close.. You can feel the front of the car lift up on the stone..
I will no longer be parking head in, it will be reverse for me from now on like it used to be back in my younger days when I had my slammed mini truck |

This happened to me today as well. Has anyone here replaced this piece themselves? It seems that it fits under the front bumper cover. Debating just ordering the part vs having the dealer do the work.
Thoughts? |

sorry to hear about it bro. my car is dark, so i touched it up with some acrylic paint. not noticeable after that.
other low cars like R8 actually have their front sensors low enough on bumper to detect these things before you hit them. too bad ours doesn't.

When parking towards curbs, I use my side mirrors as a reference. I line up the bottom of the side mirror with the curb and I end up pretty close to the curb, but never hitting it. Depending on your seating arrangement, you can try this next time!
