M5 LI & STiR Custom Install Photos

Hardware:
Laser Interceptor Quad HP
Belltronics STiR+
Radar Mirror Concealed Display

Install Location:
LI Front Sensors: Front Grille
LI Rear Sensors: Trunk Edge
STiR+ Sensor: Lower Center Intake
STiR+ GPS: In Headliner By Light
Controls: Bottom Seat Plastic

I also had a custom install done for the LI and STiR+ CPU USB cable connections. This allows easy hookup for updating and setting changes.

I like the stitching on the seats and dash. Haven't seen the contrast before.

Looks great! Like the mirror install. make sure you get it tested by someone with a gun and also confirm that the sensor are level. That's very important.

After attending a small meet in N Miami and getting some good input from SP, I sat in my car and figured out the rest of where I wanted everything. The local Indy shop I brought it to doesn't do this type of install often (maybe once before), so I provided a lot of input and the mechanics are very good so it all turned out very well between the both of us.

Programming the STiR was important. I couldn't stand it with the default settings. Next step is to get rid of "welcome" from the LI's.

I would recommend where I mounted the controls to others (as long as you are fine with feel and not visibility). It is not a "reach" away, more like perfect arm distance. The idea was if one sat in my car and played around.. I did not want them to be able to find anything related to LI or STiR+.

Never realized how much the BimmerPost app reduces the quality of app uploaded photos.
It really sucks!

Yes that is a good idea.

I noticed that the front LI sensors on the front grille are slightly angled due to the design of the front grille.

I have plans to swap front grills to the LCI M5 style in efforts to solve that. Hopefully the LCI front grills will allow for better front sensor placement.

Your Bell radar module should definitely be higher for the best coverage... behind the kidney grill preferably elevated 1 inch by some sort of platform or something inexpensive for it to sit on. I get awesome coverage that way. Your LI's placement seem like they will leave you vulnerable. They should be straight vertical or horizontal and not recessed. The LI's should have come with a testing remote, it works well up close and you should try it off center like aiming at your headlights which is a key spot law enforcement aims at. Love the exterior color.

Behind the grill is where I wanted my STiR sensor, but I have been told that the grille distorts the radar performance. I was also told that mounting low works very well since the signals bounce around so much.

So with that info, I mounted in the lower intake and cut out the honeycomb plastic so it would not interfere with the STiR radar signal.

I was shocked and rather impressed that my STiR picks up rear radar and rear laser signals. I thought I would have zero protection from radar in the rear.

Radar spreads and basically surround the car. That is why you are able to get coverage from the rear with the sensor mounted in the front. That is also why you will not have any issues with a mounting position behind the grille nor will you have issues with your lower placement.

Most people don't understand how the LI works either. You don't want recessed or too angled, but it does NOT need to be perfect. The LI does NOT "intercept" the laser beam from the police gun. It sends its own beam to the laser gun. As long as it is in a position where it will be able to see the laser gun you should be fine-especially running Quad HP.
