On this engine platform you would either need the BMS JB4 or you would need a flash tune.

Bench flash means that the ECU(s) need to be removed in order for the software file to be transferred to the computer.

An OBD flash means that the programming cable is being plugged into the OBD diagnostic port and the software is transferred that way

It is the easiest but on the late model BMW ECU's you have to open the ECU's first before being able to load the software thru the OBD diagnostic port

Get the BMS JB4.
Its inexpensive, easy to install and remove if needed, gives you great power gains and has the function to clear the CEL for catless downpipe.

let me ask another question, what if (i know this may sound crazy) if i don't want the extra power? is that an option, to just clear the code and leave it alone?

You can purchase the Macht Schnell module.
It gets wired into the OBD connection wires.
This will eliminate the CEL for catless downpipes and has a few features for Angel Eye brightness, key/window functions as well.

Depends on how comfortable you are removing your intakes to get to the connectors. It's extremely easy to do yet some people feel uncomfortable and take it to the shop.

Literally, it's simple, loses intake hoses, disconnect maf from hose. Remove the single torx screw holding each air box and lift them out. There is slightly more to it like including the snorkel to the box but you get my drift. Once out, it's plug and play to the two connectors on each side.

For the OBD, you can run that wire from the OBD through an entry/grommet behind the small driver glove box into the engine bay and then to the JB4 box.

Go to DIy and search for my JB4 install. Did my best to write it out. It's easy.

will search now, spoke with someone at velos today also, they can do a tune as well. but it's considerably more than the jb4. just to clarify, by simply uploading this jb4 the CEL will be gone?

The JB4 has a setting to clear the CEL from the dash. I can't say for sure and this may be best to ask Terry from BMS on N54Tech forums but I don't believe it clears it from the ECU. Will always show. Just won't have the annoying light on the dash. Depending on emission testing, I believe will cause issues in your state. Check with BMS please before taking my word for it but that's what I understood.

The tune will actually remove the O2 test/check on the DMe so the car is no longer running a test looking for it therefore triggering the CEL. No CEL it will past emission unless they know your Catless. In TX as long as ecu is in ready state and no CELs most don't care to look under.

Hope that made sense. Let me know if you don't find the DIY. I'll send.

i saw your write up, solid stuff! what if i bought the kit and had a shop install it? I need to figure out who is actually authorized to do so. I also will message them to find out what the deal is in case i need to remove the tune in case i need to take it to the dealer. so many questions.

Go to N54Tech forums and go to the M page and ask Terry with BMS. He can recommend a shop if he knows of one. To my knowledge, there are no authorized shops. This can be done by any mechanic that can read the instructions.

My instructions was before I found out about the existing hole between the cabin and engine bay. Should be easier to do.

What exactly is this "check" for the downpipes? Which codes are cleared? I'm still, months later, receiving check engine light after a full tune and had all wiring of O2 sensors both checked and replaced with no luck. Check engine light will not go away. I clear it with ESys and comes back within 20 miles of driving which means the ecu must be checking for it and hadn't actually been deleted by the tuner.

Codes I am getting refer to "oxygen sensor lean to rich slow response" and 2 instances of that.

Please help!

this is my fear^, i don't want to spend hundreds on a tune and still be left with a CEL^

I have contacted two tuners so far (and i'am not impressed with customer service)

Guess we'll be rolling around with the CEL for a little bit longer.

The companies I deal with for flash tunes on the S55 have not had issues with CEL removal. Of course a tune that is new may have issues with development but that has been worked out. There are plenty of posts of people on here with flash tunes.

The JB4 will work 100% to remove the CEL for catless downpipes.
It is inexpensive and you probably can turn around and sell it quickly if you chose the flash tune route in the future.
You ECU has to be removed for the first time a flash tune is completed and any time after that the tune can be programmed thru the OBD port

All the tunes out there pretty much take care of the CEL issue. I have had two great remaps done and both have solved this issue for me. Also running downpipes you can remove cold start..something I am so grateful to have removed as the noise was too much for me
