When I took my car in for break-in service about six months ago there was another F10 M5 owner there getting his oil topped off. He was not happy. After several thousand mies he was going through 1 quart every thousand. We had each followed BMW's soft break-in and yet mine uses very little. Oil consumption seems to be wildly inconsistent on these cars no matter what break-in method is used. I find this very strange.

4 quarts in 8k miles.

broke it in hard, then tracked it at 2k. I personally think there is no rhyme or reason. Just purchased a case of oil at the dealer. interestingly it is cheaper than a case of castrol european formula at autozone.

It is strange how inconsistent oil usage is.

I have owned 3 E60 M5's and oil usage was consistent, as was method of break-in (per spec).

My F10 M5 goes through a quart about every 4,000mi while all my past E60 M5's went through a quart every 10,000mi. It doesn't bother me, but I do find it strange. E60's were NA engines while F10 is turbo.

Anyways, even if your car uses a lot of oil, you should still get oil changes done (minimum) whenever it's due. Oil filter needs to be changed.

It's not just hard break in I'm referring to , it's a very detailed method . The key being lots of engine braking and varied RPM's . Any full throttle while the engine is cold will cause lots of oil use and that's certainly not what I am saying . Track use is an entirely different animal , some oil usage in a high compression turbo motor is expected .

For what it's worth, here is some more experience data for this thread:

I followed a moderate break-in process (low revs, no cruise, varied speed frequently, etc.), then started driving fairly hard after my break-in service. I tracked it at around 2k. I'm now around 7k, very often driving her like we never left the track () and I have not burned through oil at all.

I have done exactly 1000 miles since my running in service and the bloody oil level at minimum message came up last night.

Surely this can't be right?

The first time it came on I had covered just over 800 miles.
Any ideas on how you would approach the subject with the dealership?

The car drives fine generally but this consumption feels unnatural.

I would not be happy with that consumption, how did you run the car in?.

I did a semi hard break in always staying under 4000rpm but getting there aggressively and using the engine braking to slow the car.

I have spoken to my local dealer who thinks there may/must be an oil leak. I havnt seen any signs of this.

As I have mentioned before I had a 61plate M5 before this which felt quite a bit quicker.
Lets see what happens

The car needs looking at IMO, a compression test maybe.

Things are getting stranger......

After refilling the oil I have today driven the car about 90 miles on the motorway at a steady 70 mph. The car returned 32.7mpg. Which I have never seen.
You guys will recall that I earlier said that the car felt sluggish compared to my last f10 m5.
Well after today's long drive I parked the car for Round 30 mins.
When I returned to go out for the evening I started the car and began my journey.
It felt like the car been remapped. It was super responsive. I know I probably sound mad right now but I'm sat here thinking I hope it wasn't a dream.

I've had something similar - just had to top oil 1600 miles after breaking service. That was about 200 miles ago. Did a short trip yesterday - 25 miles and the car returned 28.8mpg - never seen it this high before, had I been travelling further I am sure it would have went up further. Found this strange myself

My car has stopped burning oil. It was burning a quart every 700 miles.

I put in 4 quarts of Castrol 0w-30 between 6k-9k miles and oil level has not gone down in 1.5k miles.

^ 0w30 German Castrol tends to slow down the burning rate for me too.

with 5w30, i am averaging 1 litre/1000km. Now, with 0w30, i am averaging 1 litre/1500km.

I think mine is 2 stroke.
I use Castrol 0W-30 and it's burning 1lt (almost 1 quart) every 3000 km (1800 miles).

Drive harder! If you are in stop and go or not pushing the car you will get high oil consumption. The rings are designed to be driven like and M Enjoy it.

Well when I go to Germany I drive it hard (300+).
Everyday that I go to work, it's a bit difficult to drive it hard.

Where did you find German Castrol 0w30 in Toronto area? I went to CT but they didn't carry it anymore, on the web a Walmart in Scarborough claimed they had European formula 0w30, but I'm not sure~

Not all CT carries the 0w30. I always get mine @ Shepard & Leslie. If they go on sale @ 35% off, then you should be looking at about $8 + HST per bottle now.
- just make sure the front of bottle says "European Formula"

Walmart also carries this + 0w40 as well but they rarely go on sale. Regular price @ Walmart is $11.47. Again, both say "European Formula"
