Once in a while battery is trickle charged and can be done with car locked.
Charger is a Ctek MXS 5.0 set on AGM.

They are great chargers.
I have an MXS7000 that is close to 15 years old now, and 3 years ago I got a MXS 10 in addition.

I used the MXS7000 for my dual battery 8-series during winter storage, but changed to the MXS 10 3 years ago, I use the MSX 7000 for my motorcycle.

I have also used both to charge the M5 occasionally, best chargers I've ever had.

Even 'healthy' M batteries need a top up at least once a month especially if the car is not used often, replacing them is no joke on the wallet with the coding required which is a pain and only one type of AGM is suitable, cheaper non standard batteries will not be up to the job.

Batteries require maintenance. If you don’t do it, you’ll ruin the battery over time. It’s as simple as that. These cars have power draws that can irreversibly affect the memory.

I routinely add a CTeK maintenance charger on mine - even if it’s just sitting for the week.

The auto engine start/stop? I have that permanently off so I'm not sure.

I usually know when the battery needs a trickle when the start/stop ceases to work after a while and is a good time to do it.
