Do you leave the auto stop/start enabled?

I keep mine off as I find it annoying and it makes me feels like I'm driving a Prius. But I'm wondering if it really has a material effect on saving gas. If it saves me like $5 each way to work (6 miles stop and go), then I would be willing to deal with it, but my guess is it probably saves like $5 a month at best. Curious to get thoughts though.

Depends on traffic. If your route is city traffic with lots of stops and starts, then it might help. If you drive highways or with little traffic you probably won't notice. In Boston traffic, I see about a 1.5-2 mpg difference.

^. Not once in the time I have owned it, and never prospectively... I didn't buy the M5 for good gas mileage...

that's like the dumbest feature ever on an m5. I dunno who buys a 120k car to save gas.

Valet people always turn it on because they think it's the "off" button to turn the car off. -_-

Im sure that the side effects of constantly using it is actually worst than the gas it saves you. I say don't use it.

Reduced battery life and the effect of hot oil stuck in the turbo units are the downsides to this technology. I understand that the turbos have water cooling but that has its practical limits. If it was not for Cafe/EU regulations it would not exist as a feature.

It would appear if used in an urban stop and go environment battery life could be a year or two which would be nice and expensive outside of warranty. The leftest side of governments never like when facts get into the way of their green theories.

Here are some articles on the subject HERE and HERE.

I turned it off the day I picked it up - cant be good if they explicitly tell you in the owners manual it causes excessive wear on the car.

You could solve this by never "valeting"... I just don't go places that only have valet or that have valet and won't let me give them a $20 and park my own in a prime, unmolestable spot. If I must go to one of these establishments, and none of the other options are available, I drive my 3/4 ton diesel, which usually insures they can't park it in a garage anyway.

My M5 has never had this silly feature on since there were 5 miles on the vehicle, and probably not in those 5 miles either.

From page 64 of the OM:

"Auto Start/Stop Function

The Auto Start/Stop function helps save fuel. The system switches off the engine during a stop, e.g., in a traffic congestion or at traffic lights. The ignition remains switched on. The engine starts again automatically for driving off. Certain vehicle components may experience additional wear as a result of this system."

Isnt that what i said?

For me its a pointless system (but I get why they have it), if I cared about the environment that much, I wouldnt have gotten an M5. If the cost of gas was an issue, I wouldnt have gotten an M5. Its actually very annoying to me as well, the constant on/off.

I always thought that turning the engine on and off would actually end up using more fuel than saving it?

Only when I had to go out downtown and I don't wanna walk a mile to a venue. Most of the time they didn't even know how to get out of the e-brake. lol

Only once, when someone else pushed it without me knowing. It felt weird so I switched it back off.
