Engine Warm up and rev limit in f10 m5

I know the m3 has this but is there a feature in the f10 m5 that prevents over revving the engine when it is cold

Ie does the rev limit drop until the engine is properly warmed up?

Thanks

Yes. The rpm will drop off. Properly engine warm up is a must on any car before you hammer it. If someone just got in their car and drove the shit out it w/o proper warming up is asking for trouble down the road. This car is pretty good at saving itself though.

About 3,000rpm for about a minute after first starting up and then the computer will let you rev it all the way to about 6,000rpm I think.

OK sounds good...Im assuming this is consistent with the early models?

Sounds like it is a good feature to prevent any engine damage when cold!?

This was a feature on the E60 M5 and it still exists on the F10 M5 (just not as noticeable as E60).

The limit is there to avoid catastrophic damage. Meaning you shouldn't feel comfortable reaching the cold rpm limit.

Good rule of thumb is to not exceeded the 3,000-3,500rpm range until the motor reaches normal operating temp.

I am not sure why M favored the static yellow/orange rev markers instead of the varying engine markers like on the E60 M5.

I was revving my loan m5 in neutral to hear the growl and exhaust, once engine was warm of course, but it wouldn't go above 4000 rpm... Is this normal when in neutral. Is it a safety feature or what turbo engines do?

Hi. I've just had this very discussion with my dealer. Car went in for service, they did a software upgrade and now i cannot give my car a good rev in neutral to listen to its BIG sounds! Their response... Cannot reverse the update!

This sort 'nanny' restriction should never be applied to an 'M' car! Cannot imagine AMG ever doing this and as I pointed out to my dealer, this could be my last BMW :-(

I'm liking this feature, mainly for when I go in for service.

@Head if your car is at normal operating temp and your driving it then stop and try to rev it in neutral it should do so without any restriction.

However if you attempt to do so while it's under normal operating temp or shortly after turning the motor over, it most likely will not.

avInch. Yeah I thought the same. But nope, at temperature, traction off, 'M' button pushed. Doesnt matter make any difference, 4000rpm max. Anybody would think we are driving a Prious!

+1 Head. In fact after a while the revs got stuck at 4k even when I took my foot off the pedal... Like it was poised and ready for launch control. I guess this must be to do with the turbos though and recirculating gases to keep turbos spooling or something..? I tried it in all throttle settings but it never got passed 4k

I just revved my car up yesterday, and another M5 was able to do the same. Mine is a 03.2013 build, and the other was a 2013 as well.

Just to verify, how many miles are on your M5? Your past the break-in correct?
