Hi Guys,
my car is late april production (MY 2013) and I have never experienced this sound and at delivery I asked the dealer about this issue and they said they never heard about it. The road are pretty smooth here alot of speed bumps though but till now never heard the "clunk". Do you think bmw will do an official recall when the issue is solved, or you think its already solved?

I could hear the clunk sound ever so lightly, but after installation of the H&R springs it's gone completely quiet. Same like the guy with the Schnitzer springs. I guess we can say we know what it is, and how to solve it yourself.

Hi, are you satisfied with the H&R springs? Do you have some photos to show the result?
I had H&R on my 550Xi and they worked very well on that car.

Yes I am very pleased with them. There is another thread with pics of my "modified" imperial blue M5.

My car was built week of March 26th, so as of that date BMW has not addressed it at the factory level.
Quite disturbing. I don't understand how they could miss a fairly obvious problem like this...

Since it's not clear when they'll start using the new coil springs in production, I'm thinking about canceling my order for now, and waiting until there's some clarity on this issue.

I think this car hit the underside of its front skirt on the road going too fast on that speed bump.

Yes. That is the front of the car scraping. That is not the clunk. I would be surprised if you would hear the clunk outside the car to be honest.

As visualguy and Aussie F10M said, the metallic sound in your video was not the 'clunk sound' but from the speed-bump. But I'm sure the driver of M5 in your video did hear the real 'clunk sound' himself when he drove over those speedbumps

Imagine you're driving a car with a heavy toolbox /a baseball bat/luggage in your trunk on uneven road surface - that's what the real 'clunk sound' sounds is like.

What causes it? What's the defect in the rear coil springs or struts?

Apparently the rear coils are about 1cm too short and that gives them some rotational play - it is the rotation and hitting the stop which causes the noise (so I am told).

I see - thanks. Not good... Wouldn't this gradually damage the upper pad as the coil hits it again and again over time?

BMW seems to be doing too much testing on tracks and other perfect roads, and too little on rough roads... Still, you would think they would at least test the car a few times on some speed bumps.

I hope the coil springs in the 2013 model year production are good, but who knows - the problem was discovered only recently.

Dealership can do nothing, we must wait until BMW releases replacement coils somewhere around December 2012 or buy aftermarket springs.

I'm increasingly getting concerned that the bugs haven't been discovered and fixed on the F10 M5 yet...

Emissions light just went out. I've got a Ferrari that does this sort of thing occasionally. They usually fix themselves.

I apologize, yes I meant by the end of this year, so December 2012. Corrected it

Of course the bugs haven't been fully discovered yet. That's always the case during a first year run.
